5 more sterilizations completeted

Despite the fact that we are going through some "lean times" as far as funding is concerned, even now and then we are able to carry on with our mission of reducing the stray animal population through generous contributions from our sponsors around the world.

This latest discovery of a pack of dogs actually came from a Burmese job site where the transient workers are doing construction for Thai firms. This is a very common practice in Thailand and I don't know why that is. I presume it must be better wages on this side of the border. The Burmese don't make a great deal of money but they tend to be very generous with their leftovers as far as street dogs are concerned and in exchange the street dogs provide their temporary housing areas with some security. Everyone wins in this situation.

As wonderful as this exchange of food for protection is, it introduces another problem: Well fed dogs have a tendency to engage in other dog activities such as making babies. Some of the pups were quite young and it is good that we got to them before they reached maturity and therefore we are able to stop the multiplication of dogs before it even starts. We picked up a total of 5 females and transported them to the facility where they will be sterilized, vaccinated and treated for fleas and ticks.

The good news about this particular pack is that although they all live outdoors, there didn't seem to be much of a problem with parasites of any sort. I can't say why this is but I think it is because the Burmese have provided them with clean porch areas to sleep on and the infestation never had a chance to invade the pack. This is all fantastic news.

The children of the workers were a little worried that we were stealing their babies so we assured them via a translator and speaking to their parents that we are not taking them away forever, we are just taking them to the doctor and then will bring them back in a few days. The innocence of children is pretty amazing sometimes because they were very happy and had a lot of questions about "why are the dogs sick" and we well, kind of lied to them about this but promised them that their friends will be back very soon.

This is exactly what we will do as well. The sterilization operation doesn't take very long and we will only need 1 or 2 days of recovery time now that advancements in sutures mean that the "stitches" will simply dissolve over time. There is no need for the dogs to return to the clinics in order to have them removed. Most of the time the dogs don't really even mess with the stitches a great deal because of the fact that they can't. The incision is on their bellies afterall and everything will be fine.

We will check back every couple of days to make sure that this is the case because a worst case scenario would be if we were to disappoint these children by accidentally harming one of their babies.

There was the added advantage of a little education with the kids too, as it was later explained to them via a translator about how important it is to look after dogs and we left it up to the parents if they wanted to explain to them what "sterilization" actually means. This was just a bonus, because the reason why the situation got out of control in Thailand and other areas of the world in the first places is because there is an attitude of non-concern when it comes to stray dog populations spiraling quickly out of control and how the entire situation because untenable at that point.

5 down, thousands to go. We chip away at it each day but we can see the benefits of our work over the years, and that is why we keep doing what we are doing.

keep up the good work it's good to know that the area is no so full of parasites to attack the dogs, also refreshing to see that the children were concerned with what was happening to the dogs.
