A message about the importance of sterilizing animals

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITY2 months ago

These slides were made by our team to try to educate the public about the dangers of allowing the Thailand animal population to grow out of control. Believe it or not, we do receive some level of pushback when we are sterilizing animals free of charge because there are some, not many, but some out there that think it is a bad thing to take away an animal's reproductive capabilities. To those people I say you need to see the level of suffering that we see working in this field.

I think it is a powerful message that people need to understand.

This is absolutely true. The main issue we face in Thailand isn't just that animals don't have homes, they don't even have any space. They live wherever they can and often are regularly chased away from these places.

I see this a lot doing what I do. Some of the states that we find these homeless animals in is just horrible and sad. When you find a cat that is no longer taking care of its fur, things are very bad for that cat.

Until nearly all of the stray animals are spayed and neutered the problem will not stop. We can't possible get to all of them, but each one that we don't get simply makes the problems worse.

It takes some time of course, but this is the power of compounding numbers. One mother can have 6 pups every 6 months or so, and if half of those are female, the same happens for them, and next thing you know the population is extremely huge. Huge to the point where there is no way for them to all have food and shelter. This is when starvation, disease, and slow death starts to happen. Also, when there isn't enough food the pack starts to fight with one another over what little food can be found and the weakest are bullied and likely never receive any food at all.

To anyone out there that is anti-sterilization, I hope that you can change your mind and realize that this huge problem has only one solution. It is built into dog DNA that they try to reproduce as rapidly as possible because hundreds or thousands of years ago a pack of dogs' only chance of survival was to have as many members as possible. We don't live in those times anymore and now this built in reproductive cycle is what is causing the pain and suffering in the animals.

If you have a dog or cat that isn't sterilized please consider making that happen. There are likely organizations in your area that will do this for you for free, or next to free. You might think that puppies and kittens are cute because they are, but unless you are prepared to take care of all of them, it is really a stupid idea to allow this to happen. Just like Bob Barker always used to say, have your pet spayed or neutered today.

Sadly this is the reality the stray dogs and cats are facing through ignorance and neglect by owners who never lived up to their responsibilities. An animal is for life and not when you have had enough. I know someone who has a dog every year or so and they always have puppies. I have spoken to them that they need to sterilize whether it is a boy or a girl but argue t is the animals rights. Religion unfortunately plays a part in this and this is not all ignorance.

It is indeed ignorance and people like this shouldn't really have pets. The only animals that should be allowed to replicate like mad would be farm dogs such as the ones that I recall my grandparents having when I was a child. Even then though, the population has to be controlled at some point because if it isn't, it will grow out of control very fast. With the cats on their farms the overpopulation sorted itself out when because of high numbers a disease began among the cats who were now constantly injuring one another and then a disease of some sort wiped almost all of them out. Nature has a way of dealing with this sort of thing on its own, but it is a terrible way to go.

I can really feel the depth of your concern. I also hope that our government will support or even take more initiative towards projects like this. It would be nice if they are given a comfortable shelter to live. But that's really impossible because they can multiply fast. Doing this can prevent too many stray dogs and cats so they won't end up hungry and unhealthy. This is just being a responsible furparent and for all citizens to be aware.

We and many other organizations have petitioned the government for many years to at least help with getting our message to the population but they always turn a blind eye. I guess it is a cultural thing. Dogs have always been overpopulated in this country and it is just a way of life for many people.

I can understand your sentiment. I feel it's similar here. We couldn't do much more for this without full support from the government. In our own little ways, at least we can still do something. But there's still that feeling of "not enough." It doesn't end huhu...

I remember my father sterilizing our pets, not because he wanted to deprive them of reproduction, but because of some incidents that we can no longer take care of their babies. And when we got them adopted, we saw how they received maltreatment.

This is a good life lesson that your father taught you.

Yes indeed. If you ever are in a position in your life to help them, please do so.
