About a week ago I made a post about a dog with a horrible eye injury. It was so gruesome that for the first time in a while I made certain that the initial image was not of the dog in question. We do not know what caused the eye injury but we suspect that a human was involved because there was no other signs of a fight the likes of which would happen with another dog.
We didn't think that we were going to be able to save his eye and unfortunately I was correct about that. There are very few doggy eye specialists in Thailand so even if the eye could be saved it would have cost considerably more than we have in our coffers. The eye had to be removed and the socket sealed up. Dogs are extremely resilient creatures so it wouldn't surprise me if this dog soon forgets that he ever had 2 eyes.
When we returned the dog to his home area we were told that the dog has a name and that name is "Nam Taan" or "sugar" when translated to English. He is actually quite well-liked in the community and this makes the injury that much more perplexing. If some human did do this to him I guess that is just one very cruel person in this community.
Sugar was very happy to be home as I am sure that the time he spent in the crates being transported and the time in the clinic was a very scary time for him. For most of the dogs that we encounter, they have only ever known a tiny plot of land and are very familiar with it, so when we take them miles away to a sterile clinic filled with smells of other dogs and the cries that come along with being there, it can be a very frightening experience for them.
Sugar took to running around and refamiliarizing himself with the area and it was evident that he was just delighted to be back here, back to his home.
Another good thing came out of this was that a local man offered to pay better attention to Sugar and to make sure that he is safe and fed. We provided him with food and our phone number should the situation change and he seemed enthusiastic to take on this role. Sugar is a "roamer" so this might prove a bit difficult, but dogs do have a tendency to return to where the easy food comes from and we hope that they can establish a bond that will enable Sugar to have a homebase of sorts. We are not expecting the man to allow Sugar inside the house, which is rare in Thailand for larger dogs, but the fact that he is going to pay attention to Sugar and his health, this is a big plus for us since we lack the resources to look after the pup on our own.
Sugar is going to have to deal with the fact that he only has one eye now but honestly, this is not a very big deal for dogs. They are truly amazing creatures because they have this amazing capability to just "get on with it" as far as life is concerned regardless of whatever sort of calamity has come into their lives. I've seen this happen with eyes and even limbs before. Dogs simply don't mope about feeling sorry for themselves but instead try to make the most of their lives with what little they have. Happiness comes so easily for them if they are just shown a little compassion and given some level of safety in their lives. We could learn a lot from dogs and perhaps try to find joy in simple things the way that they do.

Amazing how quickly animals recover from serious injuries and yes it sounds like some idiot did this intentionally.
