Dogs getting very excited about my arrival at the temple

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITY2 months ago

This time I decided to document my arrival at one of the smaller temples that we monitor called "Wat Krabi Noi" which I think simply means Krabi smaller temple. That might be the colloquial name because temples don't normally resort to such simplistic names. No matter, it is a significantly smaller temple than the other one in Krabi whose stray population we monitor and it has taken some time for the animals to get to know us since we have only recently started to really focus on it.

I just love how once again, the animals there seem to recognize the sound of my truck and come running out from all of their hidey-holes to greet me.

You can see my leg there and I can barely get out of the car with all the fur friends who are excited that I am back for a visit. I know this is mostly because I always come bearing gifts but I don't care where the emotion comes from, I just like to see them happy.

All of them line up for the nibbles that I put on the ground because this temple doesn't even have bowls and honestly, they don't really need them. Bowls for dogs are largely for you to protect your own floor, dogs really do not care about them and in many ways the bowl simply makes the consumption more frustrating to get all the bits out of. These dogs are few enough in number that there was no fisticuffs during the food distribution, which is good. A doggie with a full stomach is far less likely to get aggressive in the presence of food.

The little ones require a bit more care though and this one and its sibling are just starting to eat solid food. I don't think that they yet realize what to do with solid food so I bring some soft food with me that is meant just for them.

The monks at this particular temple seem a lot less inclined to actually help us out because we do provide them with free food for the dogs but on this trip I noticed that the very large bag of dog food that I provided them with 2 weeks ago hadn't even been opened yet and just had a bunch of other stuff stacked on top of it. I politely asked them that if they are not going to distribute it, to let me have it back so I can give it to the dogs here or elsewhere myself. It was not my objective to shame these men, but their response was one of that they forgot. I will check back in a few days and if the bag is still on that pile unopened I will take it back.

I can't be sure why the monks in some places are very willing to help us while at others they seem rather indifferent to the dogs and cats. I will continue to come to visit this place, perhaps in greater frequency, to see if we can make sure all the dogs are getting fed. From a purely visual inspection the dogs seem to all be in decent health and there are no new additions since the mother and her pups turned up a few weeks ago.

This is all great news. Now if we could just get the people that live here to care a bit more than they do.

Thinking about coming to come to Thailand in a few weeks to have that volunteering holiday that I had to postpone from Feb/March and am on the website but can't see any details on how to volunteer there.

I want to volunteer there for about 10 days, then go onto Soi Dogs for 10 days so can you please point me in the right direction thanks @kbv.animalwelf

we have suspended volunteering at the moment outside of highly qualified individuals (such as veterinarians) because of multiple reasons and I mean no disrespect when I say this. The fact of the matter is that we have enough local volunteers at the moment and it can be quite complicated for us to legally get foreign volunteers involved due to a recent crackdown on "volunteer visas."

As crazy as it sounds, it is considered illegal for a foreigner to do any work here, even for free and even if it is for a good cause.

I am sorry if I have given you the wrong impression about that. Soi Dogs is a much larger operation than we are, as is Lanta Animal Welfare and perhaps they have the connections necessary to make this happen.

As much as I appreciate your decision to come and help us, I think that this is where you should reach out. Lanta is a lovely place, I think you might like it there better than Krabi Town, which is where we are located.

I hope this helps and let me know if there is more that I can help with.

Hey there no problem and so sorry for the late reply!

That is such a shame that you had the shut down international volunteers, but I'm so happy that you do actually have enough local volunteers, if you didn't then it would be far worse....

I wonder why they're picking on you if Soi Dogs and Lanta can take international vollies...?

I have had to postpone the trip, but when I do come, would I be able to come and visit?

I do intend to come to Krabi, I've only been there once before for a few hours waiting for a boat to Koh Yao Noi and I really loved what I saw so am def planning on coming back there to stay longer.

They aren't necessarily picking on us but a big part of our community image is based on not bending any rules. We have a great relationship with the government right now and would prefer not to push the limits. We never know when we are going to encounter some "by the book" person that will bust anyone regardless of what they are doing is actually a net benefit for the community.

I say this because there was a large environmental group that operated out of this area that was "raided" by the labor department and immigration for "employing" a bunch of people to go and clean up beaches and other nature areas. None of the volunteers had work permits was their claim even though the organization was a not for profit and nobody was being paid. If they bust them they would bust us and and therefore it is just better to keep a low profile.

I am still shocked by the number of strays in Thailand and this maybe down to having no real controls like the SPCA or equivalent.

Well as you might have seen from things I have written in the past that although it isn't on the books they do have nighttime death-squads that will covertly take out all the strays in an area that is problematic. This involves silent tranq darts and hopefully humane execution, but is still so horrible that it happens at all. While I have never seen this force in action, I do believe they exist because I have on multiple occasions just come by an area one day that used to have a bunch of strays and then all on the same day, they are all gone.

Dogs are man's best friend. I think the dogs loves you because you are really kind to them.

That's the idea... and everyone else in the world can enjoy the same benefits! Kindness is free!

Dogs are like kids. They can be our stress reliever and a pill when we're sad🥰

definitely, I know that my 3 dogs that I keep at home and the hundreds of others that I care for in the area are my stress relief. I don't make much money but I live richly because I am always surrounded by love.

Good for you. Actually, being rich can't only be defined through money. It is just part of it. As long as you're happy and loved, you're rich. Thanks for your kindness. God sees you😊

They are wonderful animal a deserve a life too
