Injured mum and pups rescued from a Krabi temple

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITY2 months ago

We currently monitor the animal population at 5 different temples with our main focus being on the large one, the Tiger Cave Temple. We have eyes on the inside at the other 4 and the other day we were alerted by a monk at Klong Yai Temple that there was a mother dog whose puppies were constantly crying and the mother hasn't been moving very much.

We rushed to the scene fearing that the mother was dead or dying.

The mother had a head wound that I intentionally didn't post here because there is no reason to gross people out if we don't have to. It was a rather terrible wound but thankfully we got there before it had the chance to get infected or infested with maggots.

The pups were very young and were walking around and trying to get milk from mama but mama was basically non responsive.

We gathered the pups in a basket, which is very easy to do and when we did so the pups cried out and Mum stirred a little bit. We calmed her down because she was clearly very weak, and then we carefully crated her for transport. Even a dog that is near death will find the strength to defend themselves so we put on protective gloves just in case. She didn't resist and was nearly limp when we put her in the transport crate.

The good news is that other than the head wound, there wasn't anything else major that was wrong with mama. She was just severely dehydrated and had lost a bunch of blood. The wound itself appears to have been caused by getting hit by a car and this is very common in Thailand.

This is another one of those situations that make our relationship with the monks at the temples so important. Krabi Animal Welfare simply doesn't have the manpower to go searching all of the temples that we monitor on a regular basis so the fact that the people who live and work there now consider us their "go to" for problems like this makes our job much easier and far more effective at helping the stray animal populations of these locations.

Pups that are separated from their mothers either from abandonment (which is VERY rare) or because the mother dies, are actually very difficult to raise because they are difficult to feed. You can't just throw down some Pedigree pellets and expect them to eat up... they wont do it.

While the mother is here we are going to get her sterilized as soon as she is strong enough. The good news is that even just after one day she is already up and moving around. We will likely keep her at the kennels for a few days separate from the rest of the dogs. She is already back with her pups and things are looking good. The pups are too young to be sterilized but we are going to be keeping a close eye on them from this point forward. As soon as they are old enough, the females will also be sterilized.

The fact that this mom went by undetected and wasn't already sterilized was a bit disappointing to our organization because we thought we had covered all of the females at the Klong Yai temple already. So now there are going to be 3 more hungry animals at this relatively small temple. We will do our best to ensure that they all grow up healthy and with plenty of food to eat. With the monks helping us, this should be easy enough to accomplish.

At least she is fine and will be sterilized going forward and you can't get them all even though you would like to think you can. The pups look great and cannot believe no one would adopt them.

Unfortunately cuteness isn't enough these days. The world has import restrictions that are pretty absurd honestly. One of our largest adoption markets was the USA until 2 years ago when they basically put a stop to that by having import restrictions that are so difficult that we haven't had a single USA adoption in over a year. We used to get 20+ per year but governments seem to be actively working against us.
