Hello everyone, how are you? I hope you're all well. I want to share with you about the FOMO phenomenon currently happening in Indonesia: Matcha. Everyone is crazy about matcha. There are so many foods infused with matcha. In fact, there are even many cafes selling matcha.
Prices range from low to high. Some convenience stores even sell special variants of food, both food and drinks. Examples include Family Mart and Lawson. Lawson offers Odeng with matcha sauce. They also sell special matcha drinks.

Everyone is switching from coffee to matcha. They say matcha is healthier because it can calm the mind. So, I tried one of the ice cream variants that sells a special matcha edition. I bought Aice, one of the famous ice cream brands in Indonesia.
Aice sells a Matcha Hysteria variant. What's the price and taste? It's under $1. In rupiah, that's IDR 9,000. Quite affordable compared to other ice cream variants. How does it taste? For me, it's quite sweet. It only gives a bitter hint in the aftertaste.
The rest is just color and aroma; there's no distinctive matcha flavor, like creamy matcha. Will I try other matcha variants? Of course, I'll try other variants at other convenience stores. I actually liked matcha seven years ago. However, matcha wasn't booming back then and was limited. Not all cafes carried it.
Now, almost all cafes sell matcha, of course, with other collaborations. But with this popularity, I think something is wrong in Indonesia. Adding matcha flavor to savory foods. Currently, the most unreasonable thing is adding matcha flavor to savory foods like ramen or odeng. It just doesn't make sense.
If it were in sweet foods like cake or ice cream, it would still make sense. But adding it to ramen is clearly forcing it. Does anyone like it? Sure. Some people like it, and others only try it occasionally. That's all I can tell you for this story. What do you think?
