As agreed, we will bring here a summary of our weekly Surflimpo Community meetings. If you haven't read our last summary, check it out here.
Our meetings are being held weekly, and are more of a "community meeting". We are bringing news, partner projects to present themselves and leaving space for questions and suggestions.
As not everyone can participate, we will publish a "Surflimpo Community Meeting Summary" here and on our Discord, so you can stay on top of what's happening.
The Surflimpo Community Meeting takes place every Wednesday from 2 to 3 pm (Brazilian Standard Time, UTC-03:00) via Google Meet (access the meeting link here) and is held in PT-BR. Everyone is invited!

1. All about Hive
Surflimpo is this community started by Surfguru and Route Brasil, which grew and gained partners such as the NXFbodyboard (@nxfbodyboard), Detrash, Worlpackers, Plástico Precioso - ES (@preciousplastes), etc. And at Surflimpo, we created DROP, this social currency to encourage beach cleaning and ocean care.
With DROP, we have actions to encourage participation in beach cleanings and several other activities, such as sponsoring a beach cleaning action, facilitating a yoga or surfing class, or contributing to the movement in some way. We noticed that every time we do a beach cleaning, there are a lot of people who generate content about it. On one of those fronts that we were working on to bring Surfguru closer to the web3 world - in addition to Surflimpo's social currency - we also found SurfHive.
Today's meeting aims to explain a little more about what SurfHive is, how to participate, answer questions, etc.
🔶An overviwe about Hive
Basically, Hive is a blockchain that has a social network. You can own your content on this social network and get paid for it as people vote for it by giving “likes”. It's like an evolution of traditional content-sharing platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, etc).
Much of the money advertisers pay to Instagram or Meta as a whole (we're talking about Google, Facebook, etc) goes to these intermediary companies. In the case of Hive, it works a little differently.
🔶How Hive's Token Economy works
Hive has a supply of more than 445 million Hives in circulation as of today and it has an inflation mechanism, which does not have a maximum limit; there will always be new Hives being generated.

New Hive tokens are distributed as follows: 65% for content production and curation, 15% for Hive stake holders, 10% for Hive Power stakers, and 10% for the Decentralized Hive Fund (DHF).
🔶And what is Hive's infrastructure?
The blockchain is built on the DPoS (Delegated Proof of Stake) mechanism and is considered a 3rd generation blockchain.
For example, Bitcoin and Ethereum worked with PoW (Proof of Work), which is when you have a machine running that spends (a lot of) energy to solve a mathematical problem and when it is solved, you get the right to mine a block and earn a reward for doing so. Now, Ethereum has moved to Proof of Stake, where, in this case, for you to be a miner, you have to have 32 Ether to qualify and be able to produce a block for that network; this block will be created randomly and therefore uses much less energy.
DPoS is when there is a vote to elect the people who will mine the blocks. Then the Hive community (anyone on it) will vote to choose who the block producers (or miners) will be. Would it be the future of democracy? Who knows! hehe

Each account can vote for up to 30 miners; the highest ranked are those who can produce blocks and earn Hive tokens. These guys keep the blockchain in the air. They act as a decentralized server that hosts everyone inside Hive.
🔶What is SurfHive within Hive
Now that we've discussed the boring part, infrastructure, let's talk about the cool stuff.
Content on Hive is created by us, content creators, and community members.
SurfHive works as a repository for people who want to talk about surfing and activities related to the sea. Within Hive, people (interested in surfing) come and look for SurfHive.
For example, Skatehive is a more mature community than ours; it is much older and inspired the creation of SurfHive.
🔶About voting: how are we paid for our content?
To vote, you can choose what percentage of your vote you will give to that post. In a post, hovering the mouse over the number next to the heart, you can see all the users who voted and the value of the vote of each person who voted.
How votes appear in a post.
And what does each vote mean? For that, we have to talk about Hive tokens and how to manage these resources.
🔶Hive token management
Every day Hive has this dynamic of inflation, where if they create, for example, 100,000 tokens a day, 65,000 of them will be distributed among content creators and curators (as we talked about before). What determines whether a person will earn more or less in a given post is the voting power of those who like that post. And how do we get voting power?
For that, let's talk about Hive Power (HP)
You get Hive Power when you convert/power up/or stake (yes, that's three different names for the same thing) your Hive tokens for Hive Power. This makes your vote worth more; the more Hive you have in stake (HP), the greater your voting power is. Making the stake is telling the network that you give up the liquidity of your Hive token to participate in governance (more voting power, curation, more resources to make transactions on the Hive blockchain and vote for projects and block producers, etc).
(And where do you get Hive tokens or HP if you just joined Hive and don't have anything? If you entered via an invite link, the person who invited you can delegate you some tokens so that you can start using them in the network).
You can sell your Hive tokens, but you lose voting power. If you have them invested in Hive funds (either staked or converted to HP), the greater your voting power.
If you want to take and do the power down (from HP to Hive token) to sell these Hive tokens, it will take a long time (13 weeks). It's as if you were making an application and had to wait a while to redeem your funds. They use this dynamic to protect the network from attacks.
Having HP means not only having more voting power but also having more resources to transact on Hive. We call these resources RC (resource credits). Everything we do on Hive is a transaction (post, comment, vote, like, follow, be active in the community, etc). So, to do a lot of actions, you have to have a lot of RC, and for that, you always have to keep a certain amount of HP in your account. RC is spent as you perform these various actions, and over time it will automatically replenish (they take five days to charge fully).

And then there's HBD, which is Hive Backed Dollars. HBD is like a stablecoin, which works within the Hive ecosystem. The difference between this stablecoin and other stablecoins (like Tether, BUSD, USDC, etc) is that the Hive community guarantees the HBD, as well as the Binance community guarantees the BUSD (which is the Binance dollar), etc. Each stablecoin has an entity that supports it.
We now have a sense of Hive's resources part and how to manage them. This resource dynamic is very important, so we must take care of them and use them sparingly.
🔶About the tools we use: Hive Keychain, PeakD, and Ecency
The Hive Keychain (for mobile and computer) is Hive's wallet. You need it to log in and transact without needing your keys (the ones you get when you sign up on Hive). PeakD and Ecency are the interfaces we use to access this social network.

🔶Some random tips
- Engage with people who are active on SurfHive;
- Join and explore the HiveBR, SkateHive, and OCD Discord communities;
- Engage with SkateHive as well because they are willing to help us with their curation power;
- When making your post, check the option to post within the community (any community that interests you). If you post only on your blog, your post appears less within the community, and you lose the community's relevance (meaning you potentially get fewer votes);
Option to publish your post within a community.
- For us Brazilians, it is worth the effort to publish it in English and Portuguese (within the same post);
- When you make a post, you can choose how you want to receive your Hive resources, and you can even put some people as beneficiaries of that post and define what percentage they will earn from that post;
- Post often, and always be active in the community! This jumps out at the curator's eyes!
Well, that summarized what we learned about Hive in our meeting!
We are very hopeful that Hive will be a new alternative to web3, to promote quality content from our community.
The big challenge is consistency. But we are sure this will pay off in the future if we keep up the pace.

1. All about Hive
O Surflimpo é essa comunidade iniciada pelo Surfguru e Route Brasil, que foi crescendo e ganhando parceiros como o grupo NXF (@nxfbodyboard), a Detrash, a Worlpackers, Plástico Preciso - ES (@preciousplastes), etc. E no Surflimpo criamos a DROP, essa moeda social para incentivar as limpezas de praia e cuidados com os oceanos.
Com a DROP, temos ações de incentivo à participação em limpezas de praia e diversas outras ações como patrocinar uma ação de limpeza de praia, facilitar uma aula de yoga e/ou surf, ou contribuir com o movimento de alguma forma. Nós percebemos que toda vez que fazemos uma limpeza de praia, tem muita gente que gera conteúdo sobre isso. Numa dessas frentes que a gente estava trabalhando para aproximar o Surfguru do mundo da web3 - além da moeda social do Surflimpo - encontramos também a frente do SurfHive.
O objetivo da reunião de hoje é explicar um pouco mais o que é o SurfHive, como faz pra participar, tirar dúvidas, etc.
🔶Visão geral sobre a Hive
Basicamente, a Hive é uma blockchain que tem uma rede social. Nessa rede social você consegue ser dono do seu próprio conteúdo e ser remunerado por esse conteúdo à medida que as pessoas votam nele dando “likes”. É como se fosse uma evolução das plataformas de compartilhamento de conteúdo tradicionais (instagram, facebook, youtube, etc).
Todo o dinheiro que os anunciantes pagam pro instagram ou para a Meta como um todo (estamos falando de Google, Facebook, etc), grande parte disso fica com essas empresas intermediadoras. No caso da Hive, funciona um pouco diferente.
🔶Como funciona a economia de tokens da Hive
A Hive tem um suprimento de mais de 445 milhões de Hive em circulação e ela tem um mecanismo de inflação, que não tem um limite máximo, ou seja, sempre vai ter novos Hive’s sendo gerados.

Novos tokens da Hive são distribuídos da seguinte forma: 65% para produção e curadoria de conteúdo, 15% pra quem faz stake de Hive, 10% para os “mineradores” da Hive e 10% para o fundo de descentralização da Hive (Decentralized Hive Fund - DHF).
🔶E qual é a infraestrutura da Hive?
A blockchain é construída com base no mecanismo DPoS (Delegated Proof of Stake), sendo considerada uma blockchain de 3a geração.
Exemplificando: Bitcoin e Ethereum trabalhavam com o PoW (Proof of Work - Prova de Trabalho, em português), que é quando você tem uma máquina rodando que gasta (muita) energia pra resolver um problema matemático e quando ele é resolvido, você ganha o direito de minerar um bloco e ganha recompensa por isso. Agora, o Ethereum mudou para Proof of Stake onde, nesse caso, para você ser um minerador, você tem que ter 32 Ether para se qualificar e poder produzir bloco para aquela rede; esse bloco vai ser produzido de maneira randômica e por isso gasta muito menos energia.
O DPoS é quando existe uma votação para eleger as pessoas que vão minerar os blocos. Então a comunidade (qualquer pessoa) da Hive votará para escolher quem serão os block producers (ou mineradores). Futuro da democracia? Quem sabe! hehe

Cada conta pode votar em até 30 mineradores e os mais bem ranqueados são aqueles que podem produzir blocos e ganham tokens da Hive. Essa galera é que mantém a blockchain no ar. Eles agem como um servidor descentralizado que hospeda todo mundo dentro da HIve.
🔶O que é a SurfHive dentro da Hive
Agora que a gente falou da parte chata que é a de infraestrutura, vamos falar da parte legal. O conteúdo na Hive é criado por nós, criadores de conteúdo, membros da comunidade.
A SurfHive funciona como um repositório de pessoas que querem falar sobre Surf e atividades relacionadas ao mar. Dentro da Hive, as pessoas (interessadas em surf) vêm e procuram a SurfHive.
Temos como exemplo a Skatehive que é uma comunidade mais madura que a nossa, é bem mais antiga, e que inspirou a criação da SurfHive.
🔶Sobre votação: como nós somos remunerados pelos nossos conteúdos?
Para você votar, você pode escolher qual porcentagem do seu voto você vai dar para aquele post. Em um post, passando o mouse em cima do número ao lado do coração, você consegue ver todos os usuários que votaram e qual o valor de voto de cada pessoa que votou.

E o que cada voto significa? Pra isso a gente tem que falar sobre os tokens da Hive sobre e como gerir esses recursos.
🔶Gerenciamento de tokens da Hive
A cada dia a Hive tem essa dinâmica de inflação, onde, se eles criarem, por exemplo, 1000 mil tokens por dia, 65 mil deles vão ser distribuídos entre criadores e curadores de conteúdo (como já falamos antes). O que determina se uma pessoa vai ganhar mais ou menos num determinado post é o poder voto de quem tá curtindo aquele post. E como a gente tem poder de voto?
Para isso, vamos falar sobre Hive Power (HP)
Você ganha Hive Power quando você converte/faz o power up/ou faz o stake (sim, são três nomes diferentes para a mesma coisa) dos seus Hive tokens para Hive Power. Isso faz com o que seu voto valha mais, ou seja, quanto mais Hive você tiver em stake (HP), maior o seu poder de voto. Fazer o stake é falar para a rede que você abre mão da liquidez do seu token da Hive, para poder participar da governança (mais poder de voto, curadoria, mais recursos para fazer transações na blockchain da Hive e votar nos projetos e block producers, etc).
(E de onde você tira Hive tokens ou HP se você acabou de entrar na Hive e não tem nada? Se você entrou por algum link de convite, a pessoa que te convidou pode te delegar alguns tokens para que você comece a usá-los na rede).
Os seus Hive tokens você pode vender, mas você perde poder de voto. Se você escolher deixar eles investidos nos fundos da Hive (em stake ou convertido em HP), novamente, maior o seu poder de voto.
Se você quiser tirar e fazer o power down (de HP para Hive token) pra vender esse tokens da Hive, vai demorar muito tempo (13 semanas). É como se você tivesse fazendo uma aplicação e tivesse que esperar um tempo para resgatar seus fundos. Eles usam essa dinâmica para proteger a rede contra ataques.
Ter HP significa não apenas ter mais poder de voto, mas também ter mais recursos para fazer transações na Hive. Esses recursos a gente chama de RC (resource credits, em português, créditos de recursos). Cada coisa que a gente faz na Hive é uma transação (postar, comentar, votar, curtir, seguir, estar ativo na comunidade, etc) que fica registrada na blockchain. Então pra fazer muitas ações, tem que ter muitos RC, e para isso, você tem sempre que manter uma quantia de HP na sua conta. Os RC são gastos à medida que você pratica essas várias ações e, com o tempo, ele vai sendo automaticamente reabastecido (eles demoram 5 dias para ser totalmente carregados).
Carteira da Hive.
E além disso há o HBD, que é o Hive Backed Dollars. O HBD é como se fosse uma stablecoin (uma moeda estável), que trabalha dentro do ecossistema da Hive. A diferença dessa stablecoin para as outras moedas estáveis (Tether, BUSD, USDC, etc) é que quem garante o HBD é a comunidade Hive, assim como quem garante o BUSD (que é o dólar da Binance) é a comunidade da Binance, etc. Cada stable coin tem uma entidade que dá suporte a ela.
Agora temos uma noção da parte de recursos da Hive e como gerenciá-los. Essa dinâmica de recursos é muito importante, então temos que cuidar deles muito bem e usá-los com parcimônia.
🔶Sobre as ferramentas que a gente usa: Hive Keychain, PeakD e Ecency
A Hive Keychain (para celular e computador) é a carteira da Hive. Você precisa dela pra fazer o login e fazer as transações sem precisar das suas chaves (aquelas que você recebe quando entra na Hive). O PeakD e o Ecency são as interfaces que usamos para acessar essa rede social.

🔶Algumas dicas aleatórias
- Engage com pessoas que estão ativas na SurfHive;
- Entre e explore as comunidades e Discord da HiveBR, SkateHive e OCD;
- Engage também na SkateHive, porque eles estão dispostos a nos ajudar com o poder de curadoria deles;
- Quando for fazer o seu post, marque a opção de postar dentro da comunidade (qualquer comunidade que seja do seu interesse). Se você postar só no seu blog, seu post aparece menos dentro da comunidade e você perde a relevância que a comunidade tem (significa que potencialmente você terá menos votos);
Opção de publicar seu post dentro de uma comunidade.
- Para nós brasileiros, vale o esforço de publicá-lo em inglês e em português (dentro do mesmo post);
- Quando você fizer um post você pode escolher como você quer receber seus recursos da Hive e ainda pode colocar algumas pessoas como beneficiárias daquele post e definir qual porcentagem ela vai ganhar com aquele post;
- Poste com frequência, esteja sempre ativo na comunidade! Isso salta aos olhos de quem faz a curadoria!
Bom, esse foi um resumo do que aprendemos sobre Hive na nossa reunião!
Estamos com muita esperança que a Hive seja uma nova alternativa, na web3, para fomentar conteúdos de qualidade da nossa comunidade.
O grande desafio é a constância e consistência. Mas temos certeza que isso vai render bons frutos no futuro se mantermos o ritmo.
