Mobile phone night shots:Hamilton food market N.Z.

in Black And White3 years ago

My entry for today's #monomad challenge.
I often visit a friend in Hamilton, a city near Auckland N.Z.There is a food market every Saturday night in a large carpark, where there are dozens of stalls selling food from all over the world-definitely my type of place! It was a busy vibrant scene and I wished I'd had a tripod and camera to capture the atmosphere.
I had my phone with me and doubting I could get any decent shots with it I selected white balance and tried to make up for the fluorescent lights and bumped up the ISO for night conditions. Back when these were taken I had just got a Huawei mate 20 Pr0 and was just starting to use it in Pro mode, which is basically like Manual setting on a DSLR.I doubted the results would be any good-I thought there would be motion blur as I was shooting with hand held at night at low shutter speed-around a 60th of a second. Also there was so much contrast with the dark night and the bright artificial light that I thought the images would come out over exposed or busy. Plus the crowds were pretty thick at some stalls so I was getting jostled a lot.I just had to be patient, set the shot up in my mind, adjust my phone camera settings, then wait for a moment of interaction that I felt would make a good image. It was taking so long my friends left to eat the delicious food and go for a drink at another stall, and came back for me an hour later! But for some reason (maybe the lens sweet spot?) and my breathing method(deep in ,hold, shoot just on exhale😀-pretty basic) the photo gods smiled on me and some shots came out clear and reasonably sharp.
In this first shot I like the little girl's face. The more I looked at these images, the more details became apparent. They are simple images but the contrast of the dark and light and the effects it produces made me happy.

I like the way the light from the stall gives sharper outline to the waiting customers. As it was a cold night the steam from the cookers give added effect.

The direct eye contact between the customer and the seller, and the profile of the customer resulting from the stall lights and the direct light on the seller's face.

A busy shot with profiles only.I like the hand bottom right reaching for food.

Finally my favorite. The profile of the girl on the right makes this shot special,as does the steam coming off the food in the cold night. The mix of dark and light gives real depth and effect.

I hope these simple night shots inspire you to get out at night and try to experiment with your mobile phone settings-you never know what will transpire!
