It's really hard to imagine the scale and timescale over which these processes occur, millions of years, packed into something we perceive as "still." Sometimes, when I stand in nature and think about it, it feels almost unreal.

I feel the same way. These processes are much larger than us, and sometimes I wonder if it wouldn't be better to simply approach them with respect, rather than trying to understand them.
