As a child I was fascinated by horses. I don't know why, it just happened. As a teenager I finally got the chance to ride. Today I have deliberately "unlearned" practically everything I learned in the usual riding schools. It is much more fascinating to really engage in communication with horses than to look for quick solutions with whip and pressure. Horses are still an important part of my life.
"Horses have much more to give us than we give them." This quote comes from Mark Rashid, one of the world's most famous horse trainers. If you really get involved with horses, you will discover a new universe.
These photos were taken at the beautiful Haras de la Terquedad Stud in Southern France during a workshop with Tony Stromberg. The stallion ran freely in the arena and found the photographers all around him with their clicking cameras quite exciting. That's why he presents himself and obviously wants to make an impression.
I wanted to show the elegance of the movement. Therefore I overexposed 3 f-stops and set 1/40 second. As the stallion and the background were mainly white, but the stallions mane, nose, tale and legs were black, this was enough to catch the essential movements without freezing the movement.
