The first time I saw Abelardo was in a piece he staged about the cancer he survived. Abelardo is now a performer who is elderly, which means he doesn't have the same ability to move that he possessed at the beginning of his career as a dancer, but what he does have is the experience he has accumulated over the years.
La primera vez que vi a Abelardo fue en una pieza que montó sobre el cáncer al que sobrevivió. Abelardo ya es un intérprete que es de la tercera edad, por lo cual no tiene la misma habilidad para moverse que poseía al principio de su carrera como bailarín, pero lo que sí tiene es la experiencia que ha acumulado con los años.
That first time I saw him move, I found his movement curious. If you aren't familiar with movement, you might think he moved clumsily or naïvely, but as the piece progressed, I truly realized what was happening. What was happening was that he was moving from a very high wisdom about the act of dancing, which surprised me immensely.
Para esa primera vez que lo veía moverse me pareció curioso cómo lo hacía. Si no estás familiarizado con el movimiento, uno podría pensar que se mueve de una forma torpe o ingenua, pero a medida que iba avanzando la pieza me di cuenta realmente de lo que sucedía, y lo que estaba sucediendo es que se movía desde una sabiduría muy alta sobre el acto de moverse danzando, lo cual me sorprendió muchísimo.
Today, I take classes with Abelardo, and his exploration exercises are among those I've liked the most, due to their incredible depth stemming from a very simple guideline. However, the phrases he sends us to perform are exceedingly complex because they are phrases that are deeply linked to his way of moving, which when seen from the outside looks simple, but in practice is quite the opposite.
Hoy por hoy veo clases con Abelardo y sus ejercicios de exploración son de los que más me han gustado, por su increíble profundidad desde una pauta muy simple. Pero las frases que nos manda a hacer son exageradamente complejas debido a que son frases que están muy vinculadas a su forma de moverse, que cuando lo ves desde afuera parece sencillo cuando en la práctica es todo lo contrario.
Abelardo is an incredible teacher, and I enjoy taking classes with him very much. I understand and empathize with him and his work, but I find it very difficult to be a performer of his choreography.
Abelardo es un maestro increíble y disfruto mucho ver clases con él. Comprendo y empatizo con él y su obra, pero me cuesta mucho ser un intérprete con sus coreografías.
