Pile of hooks and needles

Some of my little spiky friends in a monochrome session. They are not in bloom right now (expect one weirdo that doesn't want to stop), so all I can do is to admire the variety of spines and shapes.

I always preferred the ones with very short spines. Preferably not sticking out too much or even better no spines at all. But the more I grow them the more I do appreciate all the forms. Also because lots of them I grew from seed not knowing what I have there and those, as they mature, turn to really mean f***.

The first little Aylostera is completely harmless. You can touch pet and nothing happens. The second, very popular mammillaria look nice too at first glance. But there are some really sharp, short spines sticking out from each areole. Lovely and fast growing cactus though!

Then we have large, thick and sharp one that remind me sheet horns. Even though this one looks the meanest, the large spines are easier to handle than hundreds of the little ones you cannot see.

Little snowflakes on Escobaria are completely harmless. This one never bloomed for me, but I still like it.

Below probably the cutest looking cactus I have. Pile of little balls covered in white fluff. And all that fluff hides tons of hooks that will attack to your skin.
Those are the most fun to repot :p

Last but not least another meanie. The spines are long and stick out in any direction. Thin and very deceiving.

Thank you! They are a cool object to photograph :)

Super!

Thank you!

Beautiful shots! I really like how everything pops against the black background.

Thanks a lot :D

I like it @ewkaw , It represents someone who is strong, steadfast, lives by reason and can overcome all difficult circumstancé

Thank you! Oh I really like your description :))

Is it something from space? :)

Aliens are real! :D

here I am about it :-))

I think you nailed it right there! While I love them and think they are really pretty cool, especially since you were everything by seed and so they are all surprises oh, much like having a child! But, the fact that they are very deceiving is so truthful! I cannot tell you how many times I have tried to repot one of them and I ended up with tiny little needles in my fingers. I've spent hours pulling those little ba****ds out!! Ouch!!

When I look at yours, they all look kind of innocent.
Lies!

Hi, Ewa!

Thank you Denise! :)
Yeaaa they only look innocent. The big ones are screaming right in your face "don't touch me". But those little fluffy ones are the worst. I know what you mean by pulling them needles out of your fingers. Sometimes I find one even after some hours after I thought I got them all.

But when they bloom.... <3 :)

The wooden spikes look so sharp and all the guesswork is amazing.

They are sharp and mean :D

Nice cacti, and great pics. I've always been a fan of spikey plants. Especially succulents and cacti.

Thanks! I do like them too. Especially that they do handle my terrible treatment and hot climate :)
