Fisherman's bastion, Budapest

Hi, Hive friends!

This is my entry for today's #monomad challenge.

This time, I want to share with you some pictures I took in Buda, the ancient part of Budapest city. Located on top of the Royal Castle's hill, we can find the Fisherman's Bastion. To get there, you need to hike up to 1000m above sea level, which is quite interesting, considering that it's a hill that has governmental buildings, touristic attractions... and this beautiful castle.

Fisherman's Bastion is a castle that's worth visiting, it has been built to celebrate the Hungarian State's 1000 years and that particular name comes from... well, there's no certainty about it! Oops!

Yet, there are three different theories that might be true on why it's called 'Fisherman':

  • It was built to protect the Fishermen that lived in Watertown, which is also known as Fishtown in Budapest.

  • The name was given after a fish market that was close to the bastion.

  • And the third theory, and probably the most naif, is that it was just a conmemoration to all those fishermen that lived and developed their activities by the Danube.

Truth is that it's a breathtaking construction. It's incredibly huge and, although there's a lot of stair climbing to get there, it's completelly worth it.

Once you get inside the bastion, there's a huge terrace in which you will find either statues, some cafeterias to chill for a while and enjoy the view, and this huge and amazing Cathedral:

Also, it has several towers in which you can get a full and lovely view from Budapest. As a random fact, these towers were not included in the original design of the Bastion, they're quite new regarding the main building. At first, it used to be a militar building, but after taking into consideration that they just wanted that place to be enjoyed by the civilians, the remodeled it... and that's where the towers appeared.

I hope you enjoyed one of Budapest's incredible touristic attractions, or at least as much as I did! :)

Thank you so much for reading!
