Hey! Hope you’re doing great! Today I’m sharing a #monomad entry that takes me back to those moments in Sri Lanka where people, their faces, and their everyday life made me stop, observe, and fall in love with their culture, their smiles, and their kindness.
I’m sure many of you have already seen my posts about my adventures in Sri Lanka. But the best photos, the most artistic ones, the ones that truly carry a soul and a meaning, I save them to share here, in the Black & White community, for the Monomad challenge. I feel that the special attention I put into capturing these moments, together with the touch of black and white, turns this collection into a small piece of art that I hope you enjoy.
The series I’m going to publish over the next few days is dedicated to the people of Sri Lanka, because without them my journey and my experience on this beautiful island wouldn’t have been the same. They are incredibly kind and generous people, always ready to help you without you even asking. It was almost impossible to get lost: there was always someone offering directions, a smile, or a simple gesture of support. Always with good intentions. Always with a sincere smile on their face.
Supongo que muchos habréis visto mis posts sobre mis aventuras en Sri Lanka. Pero las mejores fotos, las más artísticas, las que realmente tienen alma y significado, las guardo para compartirlas aquí, en la comunidad de Blanco y Negro, para el reto Monomad. Siento que la atención especial que puse al capturar estos momentos, unida al toque del blanco y negro, convierte esta colección en una pequeña obra de arte que espero que disfrutéis.
Las series que voy a publicar estos días están dedicadas a la gente de Sri Lanka, porque sin ellos mi viaje y mi experiencia en esta isla tan bonita no habrían sido lo mismo. Son personas increíblemente amables, generosas, siempre dispuestas a ayudarte sin que lo pidas. Era prácticamente imposible perderse: siempre había alguien que te ofrecía una indicación, una sonrisa o un gesto de apoyo. Siempre con buenas intenciones. Siempre con una sonrisa sincera en la cara.
And I couldn’t start this post with any other photo than this one. This charming family we met on our way back to the hostel after visiting the temples of Anuradhapura welcomed us with food and drinks, and we spent a long while talking with them and playing with their little boy. I often wonder how they’re doing now, because this was quite a long time ago. I would love to know how old their son is today, whether he’s going to university, how their business is going… and how life has treated them since that beautiful afternoon.
Y no podía empezar este post con otra foto que no fuera esta. Esta familia tan encantadora que nos encontramos en nuestro camino de vuelta al hostal después de visitar los templos de Anuradhapura nos recibió con comida y bebida, y pasamos un buen rato hablando con ellos y jugando con su hijo pequeño. A veces me pregunto qué habrá sido de ellos, porque esto fue ya hace bastante tiempo. Me encantaría saber cuántos años tiene ahora el hijo, si está yendo a la universidad, cómo les va el negocio… y cómo les ha tratado la vida desde aquella tarde tan bonita.
These photos are some of my favorites. They were taken right after our visit to the Elephant Sanctuary. I managed to capture this group of friends swimming at the same time the elephants were bathing just a few meters away. For me, it felt like freezing a moment that was both simple and magical at the same time. The rocks, the green around us, the kids laughing in the water, the elephants moving slowly and peacefully… everything blended into a scene that felt almost unreal. One of those moments you witness once, and never forget.
Estas fotos me encantan. Las hice justo después de la visita que hicimos al Santuario de Elefantes. Conseguí captar a este grupo de amigos bañándose al mismo tiempo que los elefantes se bañaban a pocos metros. Para mí, fue como congelar un momento sencillo pero mágico a la vez. Las rocas, el verde que rodeaba todo, los niños riendo en el agua, los elefantes moviéndose despacio y con esa paz tan suya… todo se mezcló en una escena que parecía casi irreal. Uno de esos momentos que ves una vez y no se te olvidan nunca.
Students, women resting and enjoying the moment, Buddhist monks taking photos like any other tourist… all kinds of people we met along our journey through Sri Lanka. Traveling makes you think a lot. Right now, I’m in my room preparing this post, looking back at the moments I lived and the people I crossed paths with, and I can’t help but realize something: life is this room, but at the same time, it’s not. Life is so much more. Life is everything happening at the same time. In this exact moment, millions and millions of lives are unfolding, and yet we often believe the important part is our own tiny present — this chair I’m sitting on, this desk where I’m writing this post.
And meanwhile, so many lives are happening out there. Children swimming in rivers, Buddhist monks meditating, people going to pray at the temples, women laughing, women working… it’s incredible. And that’s exactly why I love photographing people. Because every face, every gesture, every small moment is part of that huge, beautiful story happening all at once.
Estudiantes, señoras descansando y disfrutando del momento, monjes budistas haciendo fotos como cualquier turista… todo tipo de personas con las que nos cruzamos durante nuestro camino por Sri Lanka. Viajar te hace pensar muchísimo. Ahora mismo estoy en mi habitación preparando este post, recordando los momentos que viví y las personas con las que me crucé o conocí, y me doy cuenta de algo: la vida es esta habitación, sí, pero al mismo tiempo no lo es. La vida es muchísimo más. La vida es todo lo que ocurre a la vez. En este mismo instante, millones y millones de vidas están sucediendo, y aun así solemos creer que lo importante es este pequeño presente nuestro —esta silla en la que estoy sentado, esta mesa en la que escribo este post.
Y mientras tanto, tantas vidas ocurriendo. Niños bañándose en los ríos, monjes budistas meditando, personas yendo a rezar a los templos, señoras riendo, señoras trabajando… es increíble. Y por eso me encanta fotografiar a la gente. Porque cada rostro, cada gesto, cada pequeño momento forma parte de esa historia enorme y preciosa que está sucediendo toda a la vez.

That warmth you talk about in this post, you can see it in people's faces, gestures and smiles. You managed to capture beautiful moments of your trip, of your learning and experience, like those people, those children in the water, where very close to them were the elephants. But I also highlight that woman who posed for you, the freshness, spontaneity and sympathy, all very kind and willing to offer what they had. That speaks of the quality of the human being, which is reflected in each photo, they are photos with soul and that shows.
I love that you bring here what you have lived and that you express it in this way, it creates value in Hive and also enriches us all. Beautiful black and white photographic composition. A big hug!

Qué comentario tan bonito me acabas de dejar, muchas gracias! No sabes la ilusión que me hace leer tus palabras. Me alegra muchísimo que te haya gustado el post y que las fotos te hayan llegado tanto como me llegaron a mí cuando las hice.
Voy a hacer unos cuantos posts más de este estilo sobre la gente de Sri Lanka, porque tengo muchísimas fotos y, al final, es lo que más me gusta de la fotografía: capturar esos momentos espontáneos, como tú dices, esos instantes donde se ve el alma de las personas.
No muchos pueden captar eso en las personas, he visto muchas exposiciones fotográficas del tema y estas fotos que traes tiene eso, sigue adelante!
