Exploring a Classic: My First Tests with the Steinheil München Macro Quinaron 35mm f/2.8

Yesterday I arrived in Panama looking to clear my mind, change pace, and reconnect with photography without pressure. While walking without a fixed route, I discovered a small used and vintage camera shop, the kind that seems frozen in time. Among all the shelves, there was only one M42 lens available: a Steinheil München Macro Quinaron 35mm f/2.8. I picked it up, examined it, and instantly knew I had to take it. With the adapter already in my bag and my Canon 5D Mark III ready to receive it, the decision was immediate.

That same afternoon, I began testing it. No staged scenes, no artificial lights—just natural city light, everyday details, and defined shadows. Black and white proved perfect for feeling its character. This lens has a particular way of building an image: deep shadows, honest contrast, and sharpness that peaks precisely where you need it. Its focus is delicate and demanding; it doesn’t forgive mistakes, but when you hit it right, textures and micro-details pop with impressive clarity.

Walking through Panama’s streets with the 5D Mark III in hand comes with its challenges. It’s heavy and eye-catching, and in certain areas, you need to move carefully, combining discretion with intuition to capture urban life safely. Every frame demands attention, speed, and respect for the surroundings, while still letting the photography flow naturally.

What I love most about the Quinaron is its honesty: it doesn’t soften or embellish. It shows the scene exactly as it is, with an elegant rawness that fits perfectly with what I’m aiming for these days—direct, characterful images without artifice. It wasn’t a planned purchase; I just went out to clear my mind and ended up finding a lens that rekindled my enjoyment of experimenting, observing, and rediscovering.

I’ll continue testing it in different settings, combining the power of the 5D Mark III with the unique personality of this lens. Panama gives me space to breathe, and this Quinaron reminds me why photography remains my way of seeing and feeling the world—unfiltered and unhurried.
