Mile Markers - Monomad Challenge

Hail to the Hive!

The canals are pretty old, constructed over 200 years ago so safe to say that the people using horse drawn barges back in the day weren’t using I phones and gos or google maps. In fact I doubt they carried maps at all. But there were ways for them to know how far they’d travelled and how far to the next destination.

Mile Markers.

I’ve passed them numerous times and despite the fact that I do have access to google maps and a canal map app, I still like to see them as it brings a grounded reality to my progress. Our destination is indeed Leicester and we happened to moor up right next to one yesterday.

Now in a car this is nothing. 30 mins easy. But in a snails pace narrowboat this will take days! But that is the charm of narrowboating, there’s no rush. You have to take your time, you have no choice so the pleasure is in the here and now.

As we have a wedding to attend near Foxton locks and we are getting close to there with days to spare, we only cruised for about four hours today. As luck would have it our chosen mooring spot also had a mile marker.

So 4 hours cruising 11 miles covered 😂. But taking in beautiful countryside at a slow pace for 4 hours is what it’s all about.

Love a bit of #monomad 😜

Great Times!

At 3mph you can view it all nice n slow 😀

That is slow! I thought it would at least be 5 miles an hour!
Truly a snail's pace!

Oh and the speed limit is 4mph, no joke 🤣

Yeah with all the locks in the way no need to get in a hurry.
I can believe 4mph is not a lot of room in those canals. Not a bumber boat arena. LOL!

It really makes the cliché of it being the journey and not the destination a truth as its so relaxing

It’s even slower when yiu have alot of locks in the way hehe 😜

That is what I enjoy is the history of things, people, and places!
Safe travels!

Yup absolutely! And the canals are like a living, working museum really

Awesome photos. You have a good eye for it 👌

Awww thanks. I have literally just cast off from that spot 5 mins ago. On the move again 😃
