Many years ago, shortly before we ended up traveling down to Eritrea and Ethiopia, we were in Sharm El Sheikh in the Egyptian Sinai. Now this was back in 1993 and there was very little there in those days. 2 maybe 3 big hotels only. You would have had to travel 20 mins to Naama Bay for any real tourism in those days.
We were on a boat in the old port and everyday we would wander into town to get fresh bread, feta cheese and what not and would pass this gentleman and give him a friendly wave, which he always returned with a smile.
So one day we took him a few packs of cigarettes from the boat ( as I didn't smoke and there were hundreds of them left there in storage) and said hello. He burst into a big smile and gestured that he wanted us to sit. We did so and he rummaged around and found his tin can he used to boil water and proceeded to make us tea in a gesture of hospitality and gratitude. I asked him if it was ok to take his photo and he nodded and posed, and stood very proudly. I was actually almost chest deep in water to get the shot i wanted but pretended i knew that would be the case but in reality I didn't expect it to get so deep so quickly. I only took the one shot as I didn't have alot of film and had no idea where I would be able to buy more on the journey so this was my one shot.
