Hail to the Hive!
The locks that enable us to use the canal system and traverse the landscape in a man made waterway are a massive part of the charm of the whole lifestyle. You can’t be in a hurry on the canals and on a day like today when we have 16 locks to do, it’s just gonna take time.
They come on all shales and sizes but today this one gave me pause for thought. I am directly under a road bridge just before I enter a deep lock that will raise me and Badger the Narrowboat a few meters higher.
@millycf1976 gets a proper workout doing the locks and some of them can be a bit heavy. You do start to feel it when there are a lot of them during the day.
Stood under the bridge holding a rope attached to Badger I can hear the noise of all the road traffic passing overhead. A constant whooshing noise of tyres racing over the bridge above. I look at Badger and then at @millycf1976 opening the locks and take in my surroundings. It really does feel like we live in a netherworld living like this. I’ve said it before in a previous post but it’s like we are kind of back in the UK but in a parallel existence. Out there all fast, here all slow.
It’s nice that we can dip in and out of it when we need to but the longer we live like this the stranger the fast world outside is becoming.
I like living in my watery netherworld.

Do you have to work the locks yourself to get up and down?
If so, 16 locks make for a long day!
Yes mate most of the locks you do yourself on the network. There are some big flights of locks manned by canal and river trust volunteers but these are all us babyyy 😄
So get quite a workout on traveling through the locks.
No need for a gym membership. LOL!
Very true all that cranking and opening heavy lock gates is hard work for sure!
