Posee un gran número de obras , razón por la cual muchos especialistas lo sitúan como uno de los primeros de importancia mundial.La necrópolis es una de las más valoradas de América a nivel cultural debido a la riqueza y variedad de esculturas y formas arquitectónicas.

Algunas de las tumbas o panteones se destacan por su belleza y semejanza de las mansiones coloniales de sus dueños.Otras se han hecho famosas porque están asociadas a leyendas o mitos populares.Los monumentos más majestuosos del cementerio se encuentran a ambos lados de la Avenida de Colón en la entrada norte, se le llama Zona de Monumentos de Primera.
