A small mountain village, a narrow path through the forest, ascents, descents, and at the end a mysterious mausoleum. This is how I can summarize the excursion I made some time ago to the property of Dr. Knoche, a German doctor who settled in Venezuela in the mid-nineteenth century and gave a lot to talk about because of his extravagant experiments.
Un pequeño pueblo en la montaña, un estrecho sendero entre el bosque, subidas, bajadas, y al final un misterioso mausoleo. Así puedo resumir la excursión que hice hace tiempo a la propiedad del Dr. Knoche, un médico alemán que se estableció en Venezuela a mediados del siglo XIX y dio mucho de qué hablar por sus extravagantes experimentos.
We arrived at the Bolivar Square in the town of San José de Galipán, in La Guaira state (Venezuela) and nearby we took a path into the leafy mountain to visit the Mausoleum of Dr. Knoche.
Llegamos a la Plaza Bolívar del pueblo de San José de Galipán, en el estado La Guaira (Venezuela) y cerca de ahí nos metimos por un sendero hacia la frondosa montaña para ir a conocer el Mausoleo del Dr. Knoche.
There are some people from the village who have been in charge of signaling the place and also serve as guides for visitors. Half an hour from the beginning of the path is the first stop in a sector called Plan de Alpargata, where you get a corpse, how! Well, well, it is a replica, but the story of that body is real.
Hay unas personas del pueblo que se han encargado de señalizar el lugar y también servir de guías a los visitantes. A media hora del inicio del camino está la primera parada en un sector llamado Plan de Alpargata, donde te consigues un cadáver, ¡cómo! Bueno, bueno, es una réplica, pero la historia de ese cuerpo es real.
Dr. Gottfried Knoche (1813-1901) was a surgeon and was 32 years old when he arrived in the country, the reason for his emigration is unknown. He started working at the Military Hospital in La Guaira, the area where he lived, and then bought a hacienda in the mountains which he called Buena Vista. Eventually he moved there and little by little his legend began, as people found out about the experiments he performed there: he mummified corpses.
El doctor Gottfried Knoche (1813-1901) era cirujano y tenía 32 años cuando llegó al país, no se sabe la razón por la que emigró. Empezó a trabajar en el Hospital Militar de La Guaira, zona donde vivía y luego compró una hacienda en la montaña a la que llamó Buena Vista. Con el tiempo se mudó para allá y comenzó poco a poco su leyenda, ya que la gente se enteró de los experimentos que hacía allí: momificaba cadáveres.
The replica in the photo above was the body of a man named Benancio who never made it to his laboratory because the person who was carrying him on a donkey inadvertently dropped him on the way.
El de la réplica de la foto de arriba era el cuerpo de un hombre llamado Benancio que jamás llegó a su laboratorio porque a la persona que lo llevaba encima de un burro, se le cayó en el camino sin darse cuenta.
And listening to this kind of macabre stories, we arrived at the mausoleum...
Y escuchando este tipo de historias macabras llegamos al mausoleo...
At the time Dr. Knoche worked at the hospital, there was an armed conflict in Venezuela, so if a body was not claimed by anyone he took it for his experiments. The novelty of his technique is that he didn't remove the organs from the corpses and they were perfectly preserved, unfortunately he didn't leave the formula written anywhere and nobody could decipher it since after his death the place was looted, including the mummies.
En la época en la que el Dr. Knoche trabajó en el hospital, había un conflicto armado en Venezuela, por lo que si algún cuerpo no era reclamado por nadie él se lo llevaba para sus experimentos. Lo novedoso de su técnica es que no le quitaba los órganos a los cadáveres y se conservaban perfectamente, lamentablemente no dejó la fórmula escrita en ninguna parte y nadie pudo descifrarla ya que después de su muerte el lugar fue saqueado, incluyendo las momias.
It must be said that the site where the mausoleum is built is beautiful, although the atmosphere sometimes has a strange energy. I wonder what it would be like to spend a night camping here...

I present more replicas of the corpses that Knoche mummified. At the entrance of the mausoleum you can see two: that of the soldier José Pérez (that nobody claimed) and that of a dog, whose history is unknown.
Les presento más réplicas de los cadáveres que Knoche momificó. En la entrada del mausoleo se pueden ver dos: la del soldado José Pérez (que nadie reclamó) y la de un perro, del que no se sabe su historia.
Entering the mausoleum are pits with replicas of the mummies of some of the closest people the doctor mummified: his brother, his daughter and son-in-law, two nurses and himself (a nurse injected him with the formula when he died).
Al entrar al mausoleo están las fosas con las réplicas de las momias de algunas de las personas más cercanas que el médico momificó: su hermano, su hija y yerno, dos enfermeras y él mismo (una enfermera le inyectó la fórmula al morir).
There is no record of how many bodies he mummified in the years he lived in this hacienda.
No se tiene un registro de cuántos cuerpos momificó en los años que estuvo viviendo en esta hacienda.
On the right side of the mausoleum, on the outside, there is a staircase to climb to a kind of terrace, if the day is clear you can see from here the sea.
En el lado derecho del mausoleo, por la parte externa, hay una escalera para subir a una especie de terraza, si el día está despejado se puede ver desde aquí el mar.
What you see below is a bust of Dr. Knoche, there is no information on who made it or what year it was placed there.
Lo que ven abajo es un busto del Dr. Knoche, no hay información de quién lo hizo ni en qué año fue colocado allí.
A little beyond the mausoleum are the ruins of the house of the Buena Vista hacienda, barely a column remains, and also its laboratory, which is still standing although devoured by weeds.
Un poco más allá del mausoleo están las ruinas de la casa de la hacienda Buena Vista, apenas queda una columna, y también su laboratorio, el cual aún está en pie aunque devorado por la maleza.

It is an incredible place, I went when I was a teenager and vacationed in Caracas where my uncles... Excellent photos, it's an interesting place and almost impossible to believe, I'm glad that's still there!

That´s a scary story! But somewhat familiar to me, you have already posted something about this crazy doctor, haven´t you? Anyway, the monochrome fits the theme perfectly, I sometimes also put my photos into b&w for scary / mysterious content ;)
That's right! I did a detailed review of the excursion some time ago, this time I used unpublished photos and edited them in black and white, as you say, these macabre themes are ideal for monochrome ;)
