Hello and good day everyone in the community. How are you all today? I hope all are good and you guys are safe and healthy. Today I want to share another black and white studio portraiture. This photography session was done few years back just before the pandemic happen and before my friend's studio was shut down because of the pandemic.
This is Abigail, she was a freelance model. She is more into photoshoot model and sometimes she went to a bridal as a model. I meet her during a bridal outdoor photoshoot. The studio setup was using the black background and a two lighting setup. The main light was the Godox 400W mounted with the 120cm octa softbox without the rectangle grid. The other light was the Godox 250W mounted with the 30cm by 120cm rectangle softbox with the rectangle grid on it. The lighting position was very simple. The main light was put in front of Abigail on her left side, at 45 degree angle and titled down towards her face. The side light was placed on her right, parallel to the background pointed towards her right shoulder. This will give her nice rim light on her right side.
Salam sejahtera dan selamat hari semua dalam komuniti. Apa khabar semua hari ini? Saya harap semuanya sihat dan selamat dan sihat. Hari ini saya ingin berkongsi satu lagi potret studio hitam putih. Sesi fotografi ini telah dilakukan beberapa tahun lalu sejurus sebelum wabak berlaku dan sebelum studio rakan saya ditutup kerana wabak itu.
Ini Abigail, dia seorang model bebas. Dia lebih kepada model pemotretan dan kadang-kadang dia pergi ke pengantin sebagai model. Saya bertemu dengannya semasa pemotretan luar pengantin. Persediaan studio menggunakan latar belakang hitam dan persediaan dua pencahayaan. Lampu utama ialah Godox 400W yang dipasang dengan kotak lembut octa 120cm tanpa grid segi empat tepat. Lampu lain ialah Godox 250W yang dipasang dengan kotak lembut segi empat tepat 30cm x 120cm dengan grid segi empat tepat di atasnya. Kedudukan pencahayaan adalah sangat mudah. Lampu utama diletakkan di hadapan Abigail di sebelah kirinya, pada sudut 45 darjah dan menghadap ke arah mukanya. Lampu sisi diletakkan di sebelah kanannya, selari dengan latar belakang menghala ke arah bahu kanannya. Ini akan memberikan cahaya rim yang bagus di sebelah kanannya.

The main challenge on this shoot was making her entire body has balanced lighting. Her shirt and jacket was black and her pants was light blue. It already have a lot of contrast by looking at it. So I had to move the main light a little bit far from her so that I can create more soft shadow and added more area for the lighting to fall to. as for the rim lighting I just placed it near her right side to make a sharper shadow.
Cabaran utama pada penggambaran ini adalah menjadikan seluruh tubuhnya mempunyai pencahayaan yang seimbang. Baju dan jaketnya berwarna hitam dan seluarnya berwarna biru muda. Ia sudah mempunyai banyak kontras dengan melihatnya. Jadi saya terpaksa mengalihkan lampu utama jauh sedikit daripadanya supaya saya boleh mencipta lebih banyak bayang lembut dan menambah lebih banyak kawasan untuk pencahayaan jatuh. untuk lampu rim saya cuma letak dekat sebelah kanan dia untuk buat bayang yang lebih tajam.

The light setup was really good in my opinion. It gave good effect on contouring the body and especially the face. It balanced out the shadow area and the highlighted area while at the same time still keeping the details visible.
Persediaan cahaya sangat baik pada pendapat saya. Ia memberi kesan yang baik pada kontur badan dan terutamanya muka. Ia mengimbangi kawasan bayang-bayang dan kawasan yang diserlahkan sementara pada masa yang sama masih mengekalkan butiran kelihatan.

After getting some photo with her on her black jacket, I asked her to sit on a stool and pose without her jacket. I was trying to get more dramatic effect but at first it was not that good. Then I changed the position of the main light and put it parallel with the background and facing on her left side of her shoulder. As you can see on the photo above, a rim light was created on her left side plus more on to her face on the left side. This was because the octa softbox was still being used for the lighting setup. I was satisfied with the result, it created more dramatic shadow on her and her expression is just as I wanted to.
Selepas mengambil beberapa gambar dengan dia pada jaket hitamnya, saya memintanya untuk duduk di atas bangku dan bergambar tanpa jaketnya. Saya cuba untuk mendapatkan kesan yang lebih dramatik tetapi pada mulanya ia tidak begitu baik. Kemudian saya menukar kedudukan lampu utama dan meletakkannya selari dengan latar belakang dan menghadap ke sebelah kiri bahunya. Seperti yang anda boleh lihat pada foto di atas, lampu rim dicipta di sebelah kirinya ditambah lagi pada mukanya di sebelah kiri. Ini kerana kotak lembut octa masih digunakan untuk persediaan pencahayaan. Saya berpuas hati dengan hasilnya, ia mencipta bayangan yang lebih dramatik padanya dan ekspresinya seperti yang saya mahukan.

When she shifted her pose to the other side, the lighting changed and it still make good shadows on her. Only that the power output had to be adjusted a little bit so that I can balance the lighting from both side.
Apabila dia mengalihkan posenya ke sisi lain, pencahayaan berubah dan ia masih memberikan bayangan yang baik kepadanya. Cuma output kuasa terpaksa dilaraskan sedikit supaya saya dapat mengimbangkan pencahayaan dari kedua-dua belah sisi.
