A detail right under everyone's eyes

in Black And Whitelast year

welcome to my #monomad challenge!

This week I want to share with you a small detail that stood out when I was taking some photos during my last incursion in the cosmopolitan city of Lisbon. I noticed the beautiful detail of the cobblestone pattern as well as the natural contrast of the two contrasting tones of the two stones used for thousands of people to walk on...

Have you noticed that one of the oldest professions existing since the first communities since the Roman era, are the pavement worker?

Well, initially, their art consisted of making the best use of the shapes and inclinations of the stones that they skillfully broke to fit the ones next to them, so that the path that was previously only made of earth and dust, was firm enough for horse-drawn carriages, and their wooden wheels covered with iron rims, to circulate quickly and safely, without having to deal with potholes and puddles that could mean that a carriage had to stop to be repaired. ... times have changed, and from the road, where formerly these cobblers occupied most of their work, and with the replacement of stone by tarmac, so that the comfort and durability of the floor itself, meeting the demands of the new times, as well as the tires of the cars now powered by internal combustion engines, and not pulled by animal power... all this effort was transferred to the pavement.

The Portuguese traditional flooring is in fact one of the most appreciated in all of Europe, and one of the most emblematic in terms of the art of well decorating the streets!

I leave you this delicious detail of the zigzagging geometric shapes made by the basalt and limestone parallelepipeds .... One of these days I'll make a publication about the "Calçada Portuguesa" (Portuguese pavement)
