And then you decide to become a witness ....

in Photo-essay β€’ 4 days ago (edited)

Good day , yeah i know another witness ... 😜

I've been thinking of becoming a witness ever since i joined steemit / hive, why because i've done so many things on computers in the past from playing with MIDI to running a bbs on 1200baud modems up to hosting +400 websites on a dedicated server back in +/- 2003 .

About a year ago i even bought a pc for it just to play with it , but then things in life happened and i had to prostpone the idea .

Then we had to move places , then the wife got in the hospital , then we had other family maters , then i ended up in surgery , then we got a warning they were going to upgrade the powerlines in this area and now they were done with the powerline upgrades so no more outage they promissed .

And yesterday i saw this post of @ph1102 about the upgrade of their liotes witness and a link to a simple manual from @mahdiyari on how to setup a witness in docker Link

So the hardware we use :
is a minisforum UM780-xtx

Specifications
Model:EliteMini UM780 XTX
Processor:AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS (8 Cores / 16 Threads)
Clock Speed: 3.8 GHz (Base) 5.1 GHz (Boost)
Integrated Graphics:AMD Radeon 780M
Memory:2x 32 GB Crucial DDR5 5600 MHz
2x 262-pin DDR5 SO-DIMM slots (5600 MHz + 96 GB max)
Storage:1 TB Kingston OM8PGP41024Q-A0 M.2 NVMe SSD
2x M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 4 x4 (1x if using OCulink)
2x 2.5 GbE LAN (back)
2x Realtek RTL8125 2.5 GbE
Cooling:Active cooling (heatsink/fan)

I've used the mini-pc for gaming played GTA-V , World of warcraft and Guild wars 2 on it worked pretty good even on 4k so i know the hardware is solid.

I was planning on setting this up on my proxmox homelab , but i can always setup a second one there with one of my alt accounts to see how good or bad it would run compared to this.

Yes i will be running this from home i have a decent internet connection :
since i have an optical fiber conection at home.

and since 14:00 local time it is up and running ... i think

I don't expect to run in the top 20 but every little bit helps i guess in the end to keep the network up and running .

I'm not chasing golden eggs and not invested in crypto , i prefer to invest in my photo equipment and share my photography here on hive .

So should you vote on me ? ....

That depends what you expect to get back for it , my votes are not for sale and i'm a terible dishwasher .

I do own two communities on hive ( and a cat ): the most active one is Photo-essay

https://ecency.com/created/hive-14396

and the other one is Macrophotography , but due to all IRL issues i didn't have the time to get that one active again.

https://ecency.com/created/hive-15966

Hopefully things will stabilize in the family so that i can focus more on my photography and communities .

At the moment i also do some curation and moderation work for @ecency in the discord server.

And i also do some curation work for @topcomment , so yes I'm still very active on hive maybe not always visible but i try to be there.

and o yeah the bee and the cat are my own photo's 😎

Where do you spend your happy hollidays ?

I wish I had better technology because I'd like to be able to spend more time online and learn much more. For now, I'm continuing to learn little by little from people like you.

By the way, I have a question: Is there any possibility of being a curator in the communities you manage? I would love to be a curator in both.

I find your work truly respectable, and that's why I admire you. I know you'll be able to continue doing it because you undoubtedly put in the effort. All the best!

the curation on those communities isn't really intensive so for now i have no need for extra pair of hands , but thank you for the offer :)

Congratulations! I'm impressed!

Thank you Melinda !

And you forgot to mention that you're a "stress killer." πŸ˜‚
Running a hive witness node is a huge step in the right direction and I wish you a success through and through.

I was wondering what happened to the Macro Photo community, so bad it's no longer active.

I love your photos, always top shots. Well, that's why it's good to have nice lenses.

I didn't see any link to vote because you definitely need one. πŸ˜…
Congratulations once more.

I know i use ecency most of the time but this is a lot easier on peakd ;)

Right there. πŸ˜‚

This is great news! Congrats on completing the setup!

Thank you , it had been on my to do list for some time , glad i got that one of the list now .

Congratulations on running your Hive witness node!!!
Welcome to the "witness" family! πŸ˜ƒ

Best of luck! πŸ’ͺ

thanks , will see how it goes :)

These are crazy powerful boxes for what they are. :) My back up node is running on a similar machine. :)

they are indeed , it completed the syncing now it's waiting for the first job to complete i guess ... will see how long that is going to take.

@stresskiller...

You had me, at World of Warcraft

It's funny... the title

"And then you decide to become a witness ...."

I mean, because... why not? Right?? LOL I have seen you... burning candles at all three ends. Everywhere you go? Witty, funny, but always positive vibes, and helpful. All kidding aside... I think we just gained a great Witness... I have had @enginewitty as my Witness proxy for quite some time. But that doesn't mean I don't support your Witness!!!

I used the word, Witness"..... twice or so lol If you will excuse me, I am going to go read your minisforum UM780-xtx specs again... All kidding aside, my friend. Congratulations on doing something you have envisioned for some time...

thank you Wes , having a proxy can be nice if you don't know what to do , or who to trust .

I use @stresskiller as a proxy for my other accounts saves me a lot of work :D

Congrats on becoming a witness! Your photography has always inspired me and your cat is stunning!

Thank you , the cat is stunning and snoring again on the couch πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Got my vote ...

Thank you very much for the support !

A pleasure, great to give a vote to someone who deserves it.

Hey, what a news...πŸ˜‰
There was one vote left on my account πŸ‘

thank you , that will help me climb the ladder of inactive witness servers , still waiting for my 1st block but it will come .

You got it! CongratsπŸ‘

Congrats on that! I have a slow VDSL line (20/4) for my entire home network, and when we were all working from home (4 users), it was already at its limit. Now I'm thinking about a node on Raspberry Pi after seeing a presentation at HiveFest. 😎

yeah i remember those VDSL / adsl days ...

My country has a great infrastructure when it comes to internet . i can already get 8Gbit line here but for now 1Gbit is enough for the 2 of us .

I live 50 meters from the central office, which is the hub for all internet providers in Slovenia, and none of them are interested in bringing fiber-optic service to me only... Otherwise, ten years ago, they brought fiber optics to every village, but not to me because I already had VDSL at the time...

sounds like a monopoly abuse , then again 50 meters .. maybe you can use their WIFI instead

Yes, I could have Wi-Fi; they also offered me 5G, but that's not stable enough for having servers at home.

Go for it, and all strength to you!

Congrats!

Inspring me to try this out!

good luck , after you install the software it will take +/- 16 hours to synchronice with the block chain , and then aniother +/- 12-24hrs to do your first block .

Great info! Thank you! I'm familiar with running crypto nodes but have not done HIVE before!

This helps a lot! cheers!

Congratulations to you on becoming a witness. For sure, every little bit of progress is worth celebrating. This is good news, and I wish you well with it. 🍾 πŸ‘Œ

thank you , time will tell how far we will come with it .

Congratulations πŸ‘πŸŽ‰πŸ‘, this is a good news, move on, more are coming.

there should be more coming indeed , a lot of people are pulling the plug from being a witness because they don't make any profit from it.

Ok, but it's an upgrade to whoever that got up to that point.

With all these nodes around, what are the odds yours stops creating blocks? Haha. Congratulations! Giving you a vote. Cheers!

the ods are :
you think the monthly hosting bill is to high so you pull the plug
the machine you run the node on has hardware gfailure and you have no funds to replace it

in my case it's sitting infront of me doing it's job hardly consuming any electricity and i stll have enough bandwith for my other servers in here in my house .

That's so cool! Thank you for considering being a witness then - for the benefit of us all.πŸ™‚
