You know the typical image of that big dog who rescues people in the Alps with a whiskey barrel around his neck? Well ... it's all true (...almost) !

The first historical hints of this breed come from the mid-seventeenth century: in portraying the landscape of the Gran San Bernardo area the painter Salvator Rosa depicted what seem to be these dogs. Right there they played a very important role in the management of the hospice:
from guarding the brigands to transporting goods.
This large dog (a male can reach 90KG) is at ease even in the snow. Used to open slopes in the Alps, it was then also widely used for research operations in the event of missing persons and avalanches, thanks also to its excellent sense of smell.
Even one of these dogs, the famous "Barry", managed to lead a rescue operation to rescue forty people. This action was so important that his body was embalmed and is still on display in the natural history museum in Bern.
Even today this dog is used in herding, as a guard dog and in the search for missing persons.

In case you find yourself in trouble during an alpine excursion, you can always count on the precious help of this four-legged giant!

Avete presente la tipica immagine di quel cagnolone che soccorre persone sulle alpi dotato di una botte di whisky al collo? Ecco... è (quasi) tutto vero!

I primi cenni storici di questa razza arrivano addirittura dalla metà del diciassettesimo secolo: nel ritrarre il paesaggio della zona del Gran San Bernardo il pittore Salvator Rosa raffigurò quelli che sembrano proprio essere questi cani. Proprio lì svolgevano un ruolo molto importante nella gestione dell'ospizio:
dalla guardia dai briganti al trasporto di merci.
Questo cane di grossa taglia (un maschio può raggiungere i 90KG) si trova a suo agio anche tra la neve. Utilizzato per aprire piste nell'arco alpino è stato poi anche largamente impiegato appunto per operazioni di ricerca in caso di dispersi e valanghe, grazie anche al suo ottimo olfatto.
Addirittura uno di questi cani, il famoso "Barry", riuscì guidando un'operazione di soccorso a trarre in salvo quaranta persone. Questa azione fu talmente importante che la sua salma venne imbalsamata ed è ancora esposta al museo di storia naturale a Berna.
Ancora oggi questo cane viene impiegato nella pastorizia, come cane da guardia e nella ricerca di dispersi.

In caso vi doveste trovare in difficolta durante un'escursione alpina, potete sempre contare sul prezioso aiuto di questo gigante a quattro zampe!
