In Ennio Morricone anyone has found the calmness and reserve of the wise man, but at the same time the passionate and wild inspiration of the genius, which came out in his hompositions, which astounded when it rose to unthinkable and fascinating tones, never predictable .. It is was awarded, as well as formally, as already mentioned, with the Star number 2574 in the Hollywood Walk of fame, with the Oscar for Lifetime Achievement in 2007 and the Oscar for Best Soundtrack in 2016 with "The hateful eight", arrived after five nominations; with three Golden Globes in eight nominations; with six BAFTA awards; with ten David di Donatello, including that of the Cinquantenaire, in sixteen nominations; with nine Silver Ribbons and a Special Silver Ribbon for “The Legend of the Pianist on the Ocean” in eleven nominations; with the Leone d'Oro at the 52nd Venice Film Festival and with the Grolla d'Oro in Saint Vicent, both for his career and, among countless other awards, also a Grammy Award for “The Untouchbles”.

He died at the dawn of 6 July 2020 at the age of 91 at the Campus Bio-Medico in Rome, where he had been hospitalized following a fall with a consequent rupture of the femur. He dies one morning in the middle of a pandemic, abandoning our dreams and our desires to listen to him and listen to him again live, perhaps together with himself, while following his music directed by someone else. The funeral was celebrated privately in the chapel of the Campus Bio-Medico, as desired by Morricone himself, which rests in the Laurentino Cemetery. With him rests the greatest musical artistic talent expressed in the twentieth century and, for now, also in the twenty-first century. Io devo essere contento prima del regista. Non posso tradire la mia musica.»
Fedele al proprio immenso capolavoro, tutta la sua musica, ci ha coinvolti, trascinati, commossi, entusiasmati: in "Mission" di Roland Joffé la Sua musica, coacervo di dolore, pietà, redenzione, ci ha accompagnato nella risalita delle cascate dell'Iguazú e dei dirupi scoscesi con Rogrigo/Robert De Niro verso gli indios. La musica dice tutto. Non servono dialoghi. Con un cappello chiaro, eravamo lì anche noi, occhi negli occhi di un azzurro intenso di fronte ad al volto segnato, quando l'armonica di Charles Bronson suonava una melodia lacerante, disperata ma violenta nell'indimenticabile tema di C'era una volta il West di Sergio Leone. Sempre avvolti dalla musica di Morricone ci siamo straziati nei rimorsi per un amore perso, abbiamo accolto un invitato inatteso, ma ha anche accompagnato le nostre serate, le giornate al mare, le conquiste, i momenti solitari, le attese, gli incontri con tante Sue composizioni da “Nuovo Cinema Paradiso” a “Sapore di Sale”, da “Se telefonando” a “Metti, una sera a cena”.
La sua musica non era un abbellimento del film, era il film! Completava ed esondava la sceneggiatura, trascendendo il banale, con la passione.
Diplomato a Roma in tromba e, poi, in composizione, devoto di Miles Davis, la sua carriera, quasi disegnata da chissà quale mano ispirata, dopo l'incontro con il Direttore d'Orchestra della RAI, inizia con un periodo di arrangiamenti per la tv, le case discografiche e cantanti. Ma soltanto nel 1961 Morricone scrive la sua prima musica da film, Il federale di Luciano Salce. Due anni dopo riceve la telefonata di un regista, Sergio Leone, che vuole conoscerlo per un film, Per un pugno di dollari, western tenebroso interpretato da un attore americano, sino ad allora, di telefilm. I due si cercano, s'incontrano, s'osservano e si riconoscono. Erano compagni di scuola alle elementari. Due doppi che insieme segneranno la storia del cinema. Stesso linguaggio e stessa passione per la settima arte. Il compositore diceva “Ci dobbiamo l'un l'altro il nostro successo, che è nato dall'amicizia e dalla complicità”
In Ennio Morricone chiunque ha trovato la pacatezza e la riservatezza dell'uomo saggio, ma nel contempo l'estro passionale e selvaggio del genio, che veniva fuori nelle sue omposizioni, che sbalordivano quando assurgeva a toni impensabili ed affascinanti, mai scontati.. È stato premiato, oltre che formalmente, come già detto, con la Stella numero 2574 nella Hollywood Walk of fame, con l'Oscar alla Carriera nel 2007 e l'Oscar per la Miglior Colonna Sonora nel 2016 con “The hateful eight”, arrivato dopo ben cinque nomination; con tre Golden Globe in otto candidature; con sei premi BAFTA; con dieci David di Donatello, compreso quello del Cinquantenario, in sedici candidature; con nove Nastri d'Argento ed un Nastro d'Argento Speciale per “La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano” in undici candidature; con il Leone d'Oro alla cinquantaduesima Mostra del Cinema di Venezia e con la Grolla d'Oro di Saint Vicent, ambedue alla carriera e, tra innumerevoli altri premi, anche un Grammy Award per “The Untouchbles”.
Così, quando, siamo trovati davanti al “grande schermo” e la musica usciva dalla pellicola per tuffarsi nel nostro cuore, danzando ancora avvolta dalle immagini dalle quali era fuggita, ognuno di noi sapeva che quella musica era Morricone.
Muore all'alba del 6 luglio 2020 a 91 anni presso il Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, dove era stato ricoverato in seguito a una caduta con conseguente rottura del femore. Muore una mattina in piena pandemia abbandonando i nostri sogni ed i nostri desideri di ascoltarlo e riascoltarlo live, magari insieme a Lui stesso, mentre segue la Sua musica diretta da qualcun altro. Le esequie si sono celebrate in forma privata nella cappella del Campus Bio-Medico, come voluto da Morricone stesso, che riposa al Cimitero Laurentino. Con Lui riposa il più grande talento artistico musicale espresso nel XX secolo e, per ora, anche nel XXI secolo. Qualche stilla di rimpianto, oggi, si manifesta sul volto, ma soltanto per esprimere riconoscenza!
