Cuando se enfrentan individuos con ideas radicalmente diferentes sucede a menudo que no hay posibilidad de un dialogo fructífero; en efecto, las posiciones encontradas se convierten con frecuencia en parloteos, o discusiones acerca de palabras que en nada conducen a esclarecer la problemática que se encuentra subyacente. A veces, nos encontramos con diferencias reales sobre un tópico en particular, las cuales producen, si son bien canalizadas, aclaratorias y hasta puntos de vista convergentes, redundando, por consiguiente, en la tarea fundamental de aumentar nuestra comprensión del mundo y por ende, al permitir que aflore una de las cualidades humanas de mayor estima –aun cuando no la mas practicada: la tolerancia.
No se trata de la lisonja intelectual, tan de uso en nuestros medios; de lo que estamos hablando es de la utilización del aparato crítico, no para avasallar al contendiente sino mas bien para recordarle que no existen posiciones únicas infranqueables y que la confrontación de ideas debería ser la práctica diaria en todos los estratos y niveles de nuestra sociedad. Si queremos avanzar no podemos quedarnos en nuestros propios castillos, pues nos podría suceder que las paredes fueran de naipes, siendo posible que un soplido fuera suficiente para derrumbarlas, poniendo al descubierto nuestra desnudes argumentativa, o nuestra incapacidad para argumentar honesta y abiertamente.
Estamos consientes de que no existe ninguna sociedad, sobre este divino planeta, donde no se practique alguna forma de intolerancia: la segregación racial, la represión de las minorías, la violación de los derechos fundamentales del hombre, las profundas diferencias en la repartición de las riquezas, el abuso del poder, el desprecio por el oponente, el poder omnímodo del Estado, e incluso en el campo científico la imposición de líneas de investigación por parte de las grandes corporaciones, asociaciones o fundaciones. Todo este cuadro, sin embargo, no debe hacernos claudicar en nuestra empresa, pues mientras impere la intolerancia no dejara de ser una hipocresía hablar de democracia, ya que es condición suficiente y necesaria la puesta en marcha de una actitud tolerante ante los otros para que la democracia pueda ponerse efectivamente en práctica.
When faced with individuals with radically different ideas, it often happens that there is no possibility of a fruitful dialogue; in effect, the positions found frequently turn into chatter, or arguments about words that do not lead to clarifying the underlying problem. Sometimes, we find real differences on a particular topic, which produce, if well channeled, clarifying and even convergent points of view, thus resulting in the fundamental task of increasing our understanding of the world and therefore, by allowing one of the most esteemed human qualities to emerge - even if not the most practiced: tolerance.
It is not about the intellectual flattery, so used in our media; what we are talking about is the use of a critical apparatus, not to overwhelm the contender but rather to remind him that there are no single insurmountable positions and that the confrontation of ideas should be the daily practice in all strata and levels of our society. If we want to move forward we cannot stay in our own castles, as it could happen that the walls were made of cards, it being possible that a blow was enough to knock them down, exposing our argumentative nakedness, or our inability to argue honestly and openly.
We are aware that there is no society, on this divine planet, where some form of intolerance is not practiced: racial segregation, the repression of minorities, the violation of fundamental human rights, the profound differences in the distribution of human rights. wealth, abuse of power, contempt for the opponent, the omnimous power of the State, and even in the scientific field the imposition of lines of research by large corporations, associations or foundations. All this picture, however, should not make us give up in our company, because while intolerance reigns, it will not cease to be a hypocrisy to speak of democracy, since it is a sufficient and necessary condition to set up a tolerant attitude towards others so that democracy can be effectively put into practice.
