Among others there is a couple of friends and colleagues, Malik and Bruno, one Muslim, the other Jewish, engaged in assistance, recovery, treatment and support of difficult cases of children with autism that society rejects and puts margins. Complicated cases of people used to being sedated or tied to beds according to medical-health protocols that do not contemplate the spontaneous actions of those who work by being guided by the heart and by faith.
The 'special' cases cannot be part of actions that respond to common and shared operational lines but must be treated in an equally special way, in a one-to-one relationship, with those who know how to tune in to the same frequencies, supporting and accepting the false notes.
The Specials is inspired by the true facts of judicial news involving the association Le Silence des Justes, specialized in the care of autistic children and adolescents and which was the subject of investigations into the licenses and methodologies of the association's work by the IGAS, the French inspectorate of social affairs. Once the investigations were completed, the law had to recognize the passion and enthusiasm of the association's operators and the social and above all human need for its activities.
For the film, directors and performers worked closely with autistic kids and not with actors, restoring a documentary narrative point of view which however knows how to keep a safe distance from compassionate pietism. French cinema knows how to deal with the most difficult social issues with dignity and art.

Tra gli altri c'è una coppia di amici e colleghi, Malik e Bruno, uno musulmano, l'altro ebreo, impegnati nell'assistenza, recupero, cura e sostegno di casi difficili di ragazzi affetti da autismo che la società rifiuta e mette ai margini. Casi complicati di persone abituate a essere sedate o legate ai letti secondo i protocolli medico-sanitari che non contemplano le azioni spontanee di chi opera facendosi guidare dal cuore e dalla fede.
I casi 'speciali' appunto non possono rientrare in azioni che rispondono a linee operative comuni e condivise ma devono essere trattati in maniera altrettanto speciale, in un rapporto uno a uno, con chi sappia sintonizzarsi sulle stesse frequenze, assecondando e accogliendo le stonature.
The Specials si ispira ai fatti veri di cronaca giudiziaria che hanno coinvolto l’associazione Le Silence des Justes, specializzata nella cura di bambini e adolescenti autistici e che è stata oggetto delle indagini su licenze e metodologie dell'operato dell'associazione da parte dell’IGAS, l’ispettorato francese degli affari sociali. A indagini concluse, la legge ha dovuto riconscere la passione e l'entusiasmo degli operatori dell'associazione e la necessità sociale e soprattutto umana delle attività della stessa.
Per il film, registi e interpreti hanno lavorato a stretto gomito con ragazzi affetti da autismo e non con attori, restituendo un punto di vista narrativo documentario che però sa mantenersi a debita distanza dal pietismo compassionevole. Il cinema francese sa trattare con dignità e arte i temi sociali più ostici.
