Beauty from the depths
In the village of ota there was a man called ugochi,he was a farmer,and was around his early twenties when his father went on a trip of no return,he only had his mother to rely on,life was hard for them and his mother was constantly sick and he was left to fend for her and his younger sister,he was six years older than his sister,they often went to the farm together ,ugochi soon became the father of the house and the responsibility was on his neck,he never felt like he was being the breadwinner but rather felt everyone was making efforts,this went on for about five years,he was an illiterate but could speak pigin english,he began to add other things like working for people in order to get money.
Ota village is known for its good soil and fertile land,it was already the yam harvest season and ugochi was happy about this he would harvest and sell them and even take some home,he indeed used all his efforts in planting the yam and other things on the land.One day ugochi went to farm as usual but his sister didn’t follow him, he was uprooting the weed on the farm when he heard someone shouting for help,he wasn’t sure if he heard the right thing and continued his work until the sound got louder,he then went to see what was happening,he was holding his cutlass in his right hand and he went further and saw a girl whose leg was stuck in the mud and couldn’t remove her leg,ugochi immediately ran towards her to help her,she was scared at first and finally she allowed him to help her,he helped her out and help her wash her legs,she thanked him again and ran as fast as she could,ugochi felt happy that he saved her in time,then he thought of himself saving the beautiful girl.
Few days later he was at home with his family and they heard someone calling for their attention outside,girl brought something’s to show her gratitude,they had a conversation and the following day came,they both started seeing each other and when ugochi started seeing her his life became so good,the important people in the village started getting close to him and gradually he moved to a bigger house with his family,the girl’s name is olehi,she was really endowed in beautiful and has a clear skin dazzling like gold,every woman in the village wanted to be like her,no man would pass beside her and wouldn’t take a second glance,her dark ebony color was indeed fascinating,she was indeed an epitome of beauty,the way she smiles was a scene to be adored even the elders in the village couldn’t think of such beauty,they all wonder how a lady would be so beautiful and well spoken,different men approach her but she doesn’t give in to any of them.Ugochi soon had servants and even his mother was no longer sick,she was like a blessing to him,she entered his life and it was like she was sent by the gods.
One evening ugochi was on his way to see olehi,he couldn’t wait to get there because he wanted to propose to her,he got there and found out that she went out,he went there for three days and she wasn’t home,he couldn’t say what exactly happened but he just didn’t see her,he visited their favorite spots but couldn’t find her.
After some weeks he went to the village priest and told him about his situation and the priest consulted the oracle
,the priest chanted some things and it was revealed to him,he was shocked and ugochi asked what happened but he couldn’t speak,he wasn’t sure how to disclose the information,he finally spoke and told ugochi that olehi wasn’t a living creature but was sent on a mission,she had completed the mission and had gone back to where she belongs,olehi was from the water,she was sent for something,ugochi had already fallen in love with her and couldn’t stop thinking about her,in the few weeks things were already getting rough for him,he even fell badly and had an injury.More weeks had passed and he was still thinking of the one his heart wants,he decided to go to one of the biggest rivers in the village and beg for her return if she’d listen,he did as he planned but it was of no avail,he didn’t realize when he broke down and started crying but she still didn’t return.
I see this narration as a tragic one due to the uninformed disappearance of olehi and I feel that ugochi is indeed a good man,he still saved her even when he was busy on the farm,he truohas a good heart the fact that he didn’t try to take advantage of being close to a rare gem.
