I have been curious for a while and had this question in my mind for a long time - Does Reducing Vote on Hive Really Cost You Or the Curator? I have seen this kind of an example many a times here on the HIVE Blockchain when you would have also noticed that you may have got a higher percentage vote from a curator but then after sometime the same curator would have reduced the percentage vote. Lets say first they voted at 100% and then later on decided to reduce it to 50%. In this blog post we are going to explore the same and understand if that i.e. the vote percentage got reduced matters to whom the author or the curator...

The simple and straight forward answer is that it does matter to the author because when the vote percentage got reduced then the rewards also got reduced from that vote as it got cut down to 50%. But ideally the main loss is of the curator since now he would get less curation rewards. You may ask why so? Let me explain with an example here. Lets say the curator voted with 100% and at 100% the vote value if $1 and now when he decides to reduce it to 50% the vote value become half which is $0.50 cents. Which means the curation rewards here would be 50% of $0.50 which will come out to be $0.25 cents. Please note when you decided to reduce your vote percentage your voting mana doesnt increase it will increase in a normal way the only thing that changes is the amount of vote value and ultimately it results in less curation rewards for you. If all of this is to be summarized in a table form then here it is::

I had tried the same with a small percentage of vote and it was clear that the voting mana didnt increase. The HIVE Blockchain doesn’t refund voting mana because mana is an internal resource and not a token. Therefore it is clear that reducing your vote percentage does not return any mana, making vote adjustments inefficient and often a net loss for the voter. Something you've gotten wrong here is that fact that smaller weighted votes use less vote mana, if I went and voted 2 users at 50% rather than 1 at 100% I'd effectively receive the same amount in curation rewards either way and use the same amount of vote mana in both cases.
a vote at 50% weight should use exactly 1% of vote mana, 100% uses 2%.
Unfortunately , you did not get right, OP questioned what happen when you vote 100% and reduce that same vote to 50% afterwards. There is no 2 users and 2 different post.
On the contray, reverse also applicable if weight is increased from 50% to 100%, what happen.
Ah. In that case, what OP said is indeed correct with a small addition, the curator actually ends up spending more mana as not only does the original vote cost mana but re-voting also spends mana.
So the curator would end up spending 50% more mana changing a 100% vote down to a 50% vote while also reducing the rewards they would have received.
For example:
A 100% vote is 2% mana, 50% vote is 1% mana, changing a vote from 100% to 50% would half the rewards you'd get and give to the author and you'd spend a total of 3% vote mana.
It's very inefficient to modify votes but it's often very rare it needs doing honestly.
Probably more likely to happen on very large accounts where they could accidentally over reward a post. :D
