(In ancient civilizations, such as those of Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire, productivity increased thanks to the use of more efficient tools, ) So innovation makes the difference, just like now but with technology. Your comment is certainly an excellent observation. In this post I talk about productivity, which is different from production. I'd add this to what I've written.
In the classic model, the organization is seen as a machine and people are "spare parts." Organizational theories were born to break down this concept.
