Hoy se cumplen 54 años del terremoto que sacudió la Ciudad de Caracas
Today marks the 54th anniversary of the earthquake that shook the city of Caracas

Cada 29 de julio se recuerda en Venezuela el terremoto que sacudió a la ciudad de Caracas en el año 1967. Hoy se conmemoran 54 años de aquella terrible tragedia. Eran exactamente las 8:05 de la noche, hora de local, cuando los habitantes de Caracas y de todos los Estados cercanos fueron estremecidos violentamente por un movimiento telúrico de magnitud 6.7 en la escala de Ritcher. Según datos suministrados por "institutos especializados extranjeros," el epicentro del sismo fue el Mar Caribe, a 70 km de las costas venezolana, frente al Litoral Central, hoy Estado la Guaira, a 20 km de Caracas, el movimiento se prolongó aproximadamente por 35 segundos; tiempo suficiente para provocar más de 200 muertos y 2000 heridos, así como cuantiosos daños materiales.

Every July 29 the earthquake that shook the city of Caracas in 1967 is remembered in Venezuela. Today we commemorate 54 years of that terrible tragedy. It was exactly 8:05 at night, local time, when the inhabitants of Caracas and all the nearby states were violently shaken by an earthquake of magnitude 6.7 on the Ritcher scale. According to data provided by "foreign specialized institutes," the epicenter of the earthquake was the Caribbean Sea, 70 km from the Venezuelan coast, off the Central Coast, today La Guaira State, 20 km from Caracas, the movement lasted approximately 35 seconds; enough time to cause more than 200 deaths and 2,000 injuries, as well as considerable material damage.

Según el parte oficial los daños se resumen así: más de 301 muertos (236 muertos registrados), 2.000 heridos, 80 mil personas sin vivienda y una pérdida material de 450.000.000 de bolívares (10.465.116 USD en la época). Seis edificios fueron destruidos, 40 edificios fueron declarados no habitables, 180 edificios sufrieron deterioros graves y un número no cuantificado de viviendas, de uno y dos pisos, resultaron averiadas, especialmente en las fachadas, paredes de recubrimientos, frisos, balcones, cornisas y aleros.NOTA: El personal del Observatorio Cagigal no pudo precisar exactamente ni el epicentro, ni la magnitud del terremoto porque al sismógrafo pendular se le rompieron los flejes de las agujas y los equipos de células fotoeléctricas sufrieron también desperfectos.

According to the official report, the damage is summarized as follows: more than 301 dead (236 registered deaths), 2,000 injured, 80,000 homeless people and a material loss of 450,000,000 bolivars (10,465,116 USD at the time). Six buildings were destroyed, 40 buildings were declared uninhabitable, 180 buildings suffered serious deterioration and an unquantified number of one and two-story houses were damaged, especially in the facades, cladding walls, friezes, balconies, cornices and eaves.NOTE: The Observatorio Cagigal personnel could not specify exactly the epicenter or the magnitude of the earthquake because the pendulum seismograph broke the straps of the needles and the photoelectric cell equipment also suffered damage.
