Guess the ISO!

Metadata Monday- Week 1 - ISO.png

About the photo

I left my house around 12 am, picked up a friend and we headed out to the north end of the Great Salt Lake to capture the rising milky way. This photo is taken from a large rock outcropping that gives a nice view to the Great Salt Lake (which is fairly dried up as you can tell, all the foreground used to be filled with water)
I was testing out a new term that I'd heard, ISO invariance, so I was shooting with various ISO's to see if there was much difference in the final result, surprisingly no, not much at all. I think this will make guessing a bit tougher.

What is ISO?

In very basic terms, ISO is simply a camera setting that will brighten or darken a photo. As you increase your ISO number, your photos will grow progressively brighter. For that reason, ISO can help you capture images in darker environments, or be more flexible about your aperture and shutter speed settings.
However, raising your ISO has consequences. A photo taken at too high of an ISO will show a lot of grain, also known as noise, and might not be usable. So, brightening a photo via ISO is always a trade-off. You should only raise your ISO when you are unable to brighten the photo via shutter speed or aperture instead.

RULES & HOW TO PLAY

  1. For this Metadata Monday I would like you to guess the ISO setting that was used to take the photo. For example, you might guess “100”, or “800”. .
  2. Only one guess per person, per post.
  3. No editing your guess - you have to commit!
  4. Metadata has been stripped from the pictures, so don’t bother looking for the EXIF!
  5. We are not required to tell you what kind of camera was used, or what time of day the photo was taken at, or whether filters were involved (this adds to the mystery and the challenge!)
  6. For this game you have until Wednesday at 11:59PM MST
  7. Scoring: Is done using Hive Tips on your responses.
    My scoring will be:
I've got 30 HIVE total to give away for this one, the 1st person to guess correctly (or closest) will get 15 HIVE, 2nd 10 HIVE, 3rd 5 HIVE. If only person gets the correct answer they get all 30 HIVE, If only two people get it correct, the 1st will get 20, and the second will get 10.

Edit: I had to check the steps on my camera. I'm going to say 200 with a long exposure.

Of course, Casey's 1st Photo Star post is of stars! 6400

I couldn't not. :)

Love it!

This is a bit difficult. I'll say you used your ISO at 350

I'll take the first stab at it at 3200

A stab in the....dark? 🔪🔪🔪

I'll see myself out. 😄

Let me be the second with this opinion, but maybe 3200? :)

guessing the ISO became harder with new cameras :)

1600

Looks like ISO 100 to me. 😶

ISO 640 for my first answer on the new photogames. Happy to be playing again and great shot!

Since 100 and 200 are taken, I'll go with 125 or 160.

Oh sorry, one guess will be 125.

I would have gone with 3200 but since you were testing ISO invariance I will go with 400.

800....

Testing ISO invariance ...so maybe you tried a very low ISO to push it in post? I would say 400

I was actually tempted to go even lower ...but every time I tried to go below 400 I hated it because the preview on the camera display was too dark 😄

Crap, I should have done just a tiny bit of research on what camera he's got in his bag, 400's probably spot on if this is from the a7riii........

Is it though? 🤔🤔🤔
Guess we'll see.

I think most of the possible answers are covered so just for the game I'll say 2000!

Well, it's about guessing, isn't it? I'd say 400 and long exposure.

If you're reading this and haven't guessed yet, you still have the rest of today to throw in a guess.
Nobody has guessed the exact ISO yet, so there's still a chance you could win.

So no one got this one right? Was it 16000?

No one got the exact number. The correct answer was 32,000.

well i would not guess that :D
