We need to talk about the wonderful costumes of It's Okay Not To Be Okay

In 2020, Netflix released a wonderful kdrama called It's Okay Not to be Okay. Starring So Ye-ji, Kim Soo-hyun and Oh Jung-se (who even made a publication talking about the character here), the drama brings reflections on mental disorders and the struggle to overcome their own obstacles. But that is not what I came to write this publication for.

Costume director Jo Sang Gyeong did a fantastic job, after all the costumes also tell the story of the characters. The main character goes from a more extravagant look to a more comfortable look, pointing to a disarmament of her personality so elusive, making peace with her own fragility. The character Moon Gang-tae, on the other hand, is the other way around, in simpler clothes and not very well elaborated because he carries his insecurity and fear, he starts to wear more elegant clothes as he gains confidence and recognizes that he is worthy of happiness. And his brother, Moon Sang-tae, only changes the cut of his clothes, which are more elegant, but keeps the striped prints, which were worked to represent a preference in people with autism spectrum.

It is impossible not to notice the visual impact that brings the character of So Ye-ji, Ko Moon-young, with looks totally very well worked and elegant. Even totally inspiring, I already wanted to recreate some of them, even because they are designer clothes. Brands like Chanel, Gucci, Saint Laurent, Celine, Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu and Prada make their presence, but for me the highlight was the brand Minjukim, South Korean brand made by Minju Kim, winner of the first season of the fashion reality show from Netflix, Next in Fashion. The stylist has also dressed Korean groups with BTS and Red Velvet.

Bringing volume in their cuts, bold prints and also a sweet side, Minju Kim's brand looks served perfectly for Ko Moon-young, as the character is a fairy tale writer, contrasting with her strong and somewhat obscure personality.

Today I can say that Minjukim is one of my favorite brands, and I am happy how fashion helps to tell stories, and how success stories can make a brand rise.

I hope you enjoyed! 😊
