En noviembre de 1569, después de iniciarse como alcalde de la ciudad, Fernandez de Serpa le coloca el nombre que hasta hoy ha conservado, Cumaná. Y 21 años después de la solicitud, el día 3 de julio de 1591, el Rey Felipe II le otorga a Cumaná el título de ciudad, además de convertirse en la capital de la Provincia de Nueva Andalucía.
El Dr. José Mercedes Gómez en su libro “Historia de los orígenes de Cumaná” (1992) menciona hechos que se dieron por primera vez en Cumaná, “fuimos los primeros en el proceso de conquista desde el inicio del siglo XVI” (p. 200).
Por Cumaná se inició la evangelización y la colonización pacífica.
“Fue Cumaná también la primera en el mestizaje continental” (p.201).
En esta ciudad, se empezó la enseñanza y aprendizaje de los niños indígenas con la creación de una escuela para varones y una para hembras. También se oficiaron las primeras misas en tierra firme.
Es Cumaná la tierra por donde se inician las entradas a tierra firme de muchos conquistadores en búsqueda del mítico El Dorado y también de científicos que hicieron las primeras investigaciones científicas sobre la flora y fauna del continente. Por todas estas razones, el científico e historiador Don Arístides Rojas designa a Cumaná como “Peristilo de la Historia Americana”.
Esta tierra oriental ha sido nombrada como “Capital Mundial de la Cultura” producto de todo el sincretismo que existió en esta importante ciudad durante su proceso fundacional y su desarrollo como importante Puerto.
En 1901 se crea el estado Sucre separado de Maturín y en 1904 se vuelve a integrar al estado Bermúdez, ya para 1909 se trazan definitivamente los límites de los estados Sucre y Monagas como dos entidades separadas.
El Chocolate más famoso del mundo, el suizo, es producido con grano 100% Venezolano, extraído de la Costa de Paria en el Estado Sucre.

This eastern land has been named as "World Capital of Culture" product of all the syncretism that existed in this important city during its founding process and its development as an important Port.
