Yay we made it to this popular tourist spot in Canlaon City! This 100-year-old tree is being preserved in this town and it is a famous sight to visit for both the local and international tourists. That is why when we went to Negros last weekend, we never missed seeing this tree!
I searched for more context on this tree and what the Filipinos believe about big trees and the spirits that surround it. Below is what I got from a Pinoy blog I found online:
The Balete Tree, also known as Lunok in the Visayan dialect is located in barangay Lumapao, Canlaon City, Negros Oriental. The locals told us that every night there are lots of fireflies fly in the trunk of this tree. Many of us know this kind of tree because of the mystery behind it. Filipinos always believed the traditional way and always says Tabi Tabi Po - it's just like asking a permission before doing anything like touching the branches or walking around the tree and checking it closely. In that way the spirit can't cause you any harm or illness and because of that story, no one ever attempts to cut some of their branches. (From the Blog here)
The tree is GINORMOUS! One could only imagine the storms and strong winds it had to endure to stay standing strong all these years (I mean 100 years is such a lot, right?!) I love what they did to this popular sight-seeing place as well. They managed to have a park and there are lots of food stalls and even a cafe nearby. It is very convenient for the weary tourists who may want to chill and rest before heading on to the next part of the itinerary for the day ~ pretty much just like us.
