Algo que me caracteriza mucho es mi amor por las manualidades, crecí viendo un programa de tv llamado Art Attack y este me marcó para toda la vida, aparte de las manualidades me gustan mucho las cartas, tanto recibirlas como hacerlas y eso era una tradición que tenía con mi mejor amiga Alexandra desde que nos conocimos.
Lamentablemente esa tradición se perdió por unos años debido a muchas razones pero como era algo tan especial entre nosotras, quise regresar a esas viejas y bonitas costumbres, aprovechando una fecha tan importante como es el cumpleaños de mi mejor amiga, con la que ya tengo más de 15 años de amistad.
Something that characterizes me a lot is my love for handicrafts, I grew up watching a TV show called Art Attack and it marked me for life, apart from handicrafts I love letters, both receiving them and making them and that was a tradition I had with my best friend Alexandra since we met..
Unfortunately that tradition was lost for a few years due to many reasons but as it was something so special between us, I wanted to return to those old and beautiful customs, taking advantage of such an important date as the birthday of my best friend, with whom I already have more than 15 years of friendship.
No quería hacer una simple carta así que busque cómo hacer una Orquídea de origami debido a que es su flor favorita, en internet encontré mil formas de hacer distintas flores pero ninguna se parecía a una Orquídea real así que tuve que ingeniármelas, confiar en mi creatividad como en mis habilidades y diseñarla por mí misma.
Busqué la foto de una Orquídea real para usarla de base, fijarme la forma de sus pétalos, sus pistilos, sus colores y todos los detalles que distinguen a esta particular flor; la verdad no era tan complicado y decidí hacer pétalo por pétalo debido a que no eran tantos y tienen una forma bastante característica.
I didn't want to make a simple letter so I looked for how to make an origami Orchid because it is her favourite flower, on the internet I found a thousand ways to make different flowers but none of them looked like a real Orchid so I had to figure it out, trust my creativity as well as my skills and design it by myself.
I looked for a photo of a real Orchid to use it as a base, look at the shape of its petals, its pistils, its colours and all the details that distinguish this particular flower; the truth was not so complicated and I decided to make petal by petal because there were not so many of them and they have a quite characteristic shape.
Hice la forma de cada pétalo en una cartulina para tener un molde resistente y sacar los patrones en el papel blanco que usaría para armar la flor, elegí este color porque así me sugirió el novio de mi mejor amiga debido a que él fue mi cómplice en este regalo; hice aproximadamente 3 intentos y ya la frustración me consumía porque no me salían como yo quería o tenía pensado pero la perseverancia es la clave de todo así que seguí intentándolo.
Después de múltiples intentos, mucha frustración y miles de pétalos en el suelo, me salió el primero y al verlo terminado fue como ver a un pequeño bebé recién nacido; estaba demasiado emocionada pero me di cuenta que había cometido un error y fue no colorear el centro de la flor antes de pegar todos los pétalos. Lo hice después de tener la flor armada y salió bien pero sabía que podía hacerlo mejor así que lo intenté nuevamente.
I made the shape of each petal in a cardboard to have a resistant mould and to draw the patterns in the white paper that I would use to make the flower, I chose this colour because my best friend's boyfriend suggested it to me because he was my accomplice in this gift; I made approximately 3 attempts and the frustration consumed me because they didn't come out as I wanted or had thought but perseverance is the key to everything so I kept on trying.
After multiple attempts, a lot of frustration and thousands of petals on the floor, I got the first one and seeing it finished was like seeing a new born baby; I was too excited but I realised that I had made a mistake and that was not colouring the centre of the flower before gluing all the petals. I did it after I had the flower assembled and it came out well but I knew I could do better so I tried again.
Después de tener las dos Orquídeas de papel, me puse a escribir la carta especial para ella; admito que esto fue lo que más ansiosa me tenía por un simple factor: No me gusta mi letra.
Tengo muchos años sin escribir a mano debido a que las clases de la uni las escribo directamente en el bloc de notas de mi teléfono o laptop, eso ha hecho que pierda mucha práctica como soltura con mi caligrafía y si ya desde el colegio tenía una mala letra, ahorita es mucho peor; sin que esto me detuviese, practique algunos ejercicios que mi mamá me sugirió para soltar la mano y me puse a escribir la carta para mi mejor amiga.
After I had the two paper Orchids, I started to write the special letter for her; I admit that this was what I was most anxious about for one simple factor: I don't like my handwriting.
I have many years without writing by hand because I write my uni classes directly on the notepad of my phone or laptop, that has made me lose a lot of practice and fluency with my handwriting and if I already had a bad handwriting since school, now it is much worse; without this stopping me, I practiced some exercises that my mum suggested me to loosen my hand and I started to write the letter to my best friend.
Al terminar, doble la carta, le pegué las orquídeas y le hice una pequeña decoración con verde para que se viese más bonito todo; la verdad me emocionó muchísimo hacer esta manualidad porque me recordó a cuando Alexandra y yo nos entregábamos cartas casi todas las semanas.

When I finished, I folded the letter, glued the orchids on it and made a little decoration with green to make it look nicer; I was really excited to do this craft because it reminded me of when Alexandra and I used to give each other letters almost every week.
