Last week I traveled to the city of Caracas in order to attend the graduation ceremony of the eldest of my two sons, who received his degree in Computer Engineering, after fulfilling all the academic requirements requested by the university where he studied, in addition to the national educational authorities.
For this very important celebration, which I could not miss, I traveled last Wednesday to the capital of the Republic in a bus that left from Barquisimeto, the city where I live, and made stops in Valencia and Maracay, before arriving at my destination, six and a half hours after boarding the bus and traveling the more than 360 kilometers that separate me from my goal.
Since the event was on Friday, and taking advantage of the fact that I was staying near the town of El Hatillo, in the southeast of Caracas, I decided to visit this picturesque town founded in 1784 and which was declared national heritage some years ago, due to the architectural value of the colonial houses in the area.
Four decades ago, I lived in Caracas for my university studies, and once I finished, I worked for some time before getting married and deciding to return to my hometown almost 30 years ago, with the purpose of forming a family. During all that time I lived in the capital, I used to visit the town with some frequency, which has always had a great and varied gastronomic offer that has increased with the passing of time, in addition to commercial establishments dedicated to the sale of handicrafts, antiques, ice cream, chocolates, among other products, which have positioned it as a very attractive tourist destination, not only for the inhabitants of the Metropolitan Area of Caracas, but also for visitors from all over the country and abroad.
The heart of the town is its Plaza Bolivar (Bolivar Square), around which is located the headquarters of the Mayor's Office of the Municipality of El Hatillo, the St. Rosalia of Palermo Church, the Don Henrique Antonio Eraso Social and Cultural Center, where events are usually held, as well as a great variety of restaurants, ice cream shops and other places that have taken advantage of the colonial houses to remodel them and adapt them to their new commercial use, respecting their original architecture.
But not all life takes place in the surroundings of the square, also in the diverse streets that the town has, there is an incessant commercial activity that has grown with the passage of time, in spite of the fact that the economic conditions in the country are not the most propitious, nevertheless, the businessmen and the municipal authorities have managed to continue ahead and to preserve its beauty intact.
This "Magical Town" (Pueblo Mágico) will always be an interesting option to visit and enjoy its pleasant temperate climate, while contemplating the majestic views of the surrounding mountains, and enjoying a good meal, a rich and hot coffee or a creamy Italian style ice cream. If you are planning to travel to Caracas for any reason, don't forget to leave a free space in your agenda to visit it and get to know it, if you haven't already done so.
La semana pasada viajé a la ciudad de Caracas con la finalidad de asistir al Acto de Grado del mayor de mis dos hijos, quien recibía su título de Ingeniero en Computación, luego de cumplir con todos los requisitos académicos solicitados por la universidad donde estudió, además de las autoridades educativas nacionales.
Para esta importantísima celebración, a la que no podía faltar, me trasladé el pasado miércoles hasta la capital de la República en un autobús que partió de Barquisimeto, la ciudad donde resido, y que hizo escalas en Valencia y Maracay, antes de arrivar a mi destino, seis horas y media después de haber abordado la unidad y recorrido los más de 360 kilómetros que me separan de mi objetivo.
Como el Acto era el viernes, y aprovechando que me encontraba alojado en las cercanías de la población de El Hatillo, en el sureste de Caracas, tomé la decisión de acercarme a visitar este pintoresco pueblo fundado en 1784 y que fue declarado patrimonio nacional algunos años atrás, por el valor arquitectónico de las casas coloniales existentes en la zona.
Cuatro décadas atrás, me residencié en Caracas para cursar mis estudios universitarios, y una vez culminados, trabajé algún tiempo antes de casarme y tomar la decisión de regresar a mi ciudad natal hace casi 30 años, con la finalidad de formar una familia. Durante todo ese tiempo que viví en la capital, acostumbraba a visitar con cierta frecuencia el pueblo, que siempre ha contado con una gran y variada oferta gastronómica que se ha acrecentado con el transcurrir del tiempo, además, de locales comerciales dedicados a la venta de artesanías, antiguedades, helados, chocolates, entre otros productos, que lo han posicionado como un destino turístico muy atractivo, no solo para los habitantes del Area Metropolitana de Caracas, sinó también para visitantes de todo el país y extranjeros.
El corazón del pueblo es su Plaza Bolívar, alrededor de la cual se ubica la sede de la Alcaldía del Municipio El Hatillo, la Iglesia Santa Rosalía de Palermo, el Centro Social y Cultural Don Henrique Antonio Eraso, donde suele realizarse eventos, además de una gran variedad de restaurantes, heladerías y otros locales que han aprovechado las casas coloniales para remodelarlas y adecuarlas a su nuevo uso comercial, respetando su arquitectura original.
Pero no toda la vida transcurre en los alrededores de la plaza, también en las diversas calles que posee el pueblo, existe una incesante actividad comercial que ha crecido con el paso del tiempo, a pesar de que las condiciones económicas en el país no son las mas propicias, sin embargo, los empresarios y las autoridades municipales se las han arreglado para seguir adelante y preservar su belleza intacta.
Este "Pueblo Mágico" siempre será una interesante opción para visitar y disfrutar de su agradable clima templado, mientras se contemplan las majestuosas vistas de las montañas que lo rodean, y se degusta un buen plato de comida, un rico y caliente café o un cremoso helado estilo italiano. Si tienes planeado viajar a Caracas por alguna razón, no olvides dejar un espacio libre en tu agenda para visitarlo y conocerlo, si aún no los haz hecho.
