That is really personal preface. But a rule of thumb is to go by the trichomes. So you will need a magnifying glass to zoom in and get a good look. Clear tricomes will provide more of a head high, and I do not like that felling. Milky white trichomes is a sign of peak THC, which is always good, but not necessarily the best. After more time the thc will degrade into cbn, providing more of a sleepy buzz. When it does that the trichomes are a amber color. So i like to cut when there is a mixture of amber and milky white.
