Hello friends. Today I want to tell you about my visit to the ancient city of Pergamon and some interesting facts about it. In the middle of the 2nd century, Pergamon was one of the largest cities in the province and had about 200,000 inhabitants. The city is located on a hill of which overlooks the whole valley of Bergama. The settlement of Pergamon can be dated as far back as the Archaic period, thanks to modest archaeological finds, mostly pottery fragments. Pergamon was a possession of the family of Gongilos of Eretria, a Greek favored by the Achaemenid Empire (Old Persian Kingdom) who took refuge in Asia Minor and received the territory of Pergamon from Xerxes I.At the beginning of the 2nd century, the city was declared a metropolis, thus standing out from the nearby cities of Ephesus and Smyrna. The construction of numerous massive temples, a stadium, a theater, a huge forum and an amphitheater is also dated to this period. In addition, within the city limits , the sanctuary of Asclepius. The sunset of Pergamon occurred in the 3rd century as a strong earthquake almost knocked the city to the ground. It was subsequently captured and plundered by the tribe of the Goths. However, even now, the greatness and beauty that this ancient metropolis possessed is evident. It was a great privilege for me to be able to walk its streets and share a part of the city's history with you.
