THE BETROTHAL GIFTS IN VIETNAMESE WEDDING !!!

Today's topic is not about food, tourism, or coffee shops; it is about ceremony, a ritual in every Vietnamese wedding. A wedding is a ceremony that almost everyone will experience at some point in their lives. Each country and region will have their own wedding ceremony methods, and there are many steps to take in order to plan the perfect wedding. The preparation for the wedding betrothal gifts is essential for any wedding ceremony.
After going through my wedding and my brother-in-law's wedding one week ago, I have a better view and understanding of the betrothal gifts in the wedding day. So today I share you about the betrothal gifts that the groom's family brought to the bride's family at my brother-in-law's wedding.

1. The origin of the wedding betrothal gifts.

Wedding betrothal gifts are derived from the old Money-loading Ceremony and are the fourth of the six rituals required to complete a wedding. To clarify, this is the custom of challenging issued by the bride's family, they will set specific financial and gift requirements. The wedding ceremony will take place if the groom's family can meet it. Nowadays, the wedding ceremony has been simplified, so this ceremony can be performed concurrently with the wedding ceremony . Depending on the economic circumstances of the groom's family, a suitable wedding betrothal gifts can be prepared.

2. The significance of a betrothal gifts on the wedding day.

  • Nowadays, the bride's family doesn't require the groom's family to prepare gifts or money; instead, he takes initiative to prepare according to his circumstances to demonstrate that the groom's family is capable of providing for bride's future life.
  • The second meaning is that the groom's family shares the feast's expenses with the girl's family while also donating jewelry so that the couple can do business in the future.
  • This is the first gift sent by the groom's family to the bride's family to demonstrate the groom's family's sincerity in giving birth to and raising a good and obedient bride while also establishing a relationship between the two families.

3. The betrothal gifts are prepared for the wedding day.

- Tray of betel and betel nuts

This tray was created using 100 betel-nuts and 100 betel leaves. The image of a green betel tightly wrapped around the areca to welcome the sun and wind represents a faithful spouse, according to folklore. Betel and betel-nut combine to form a crimson color that represents the newly-wed's faithful.

- Wine, tea and candle.

This is an offering to the ancestors to demonstrate the descendants' respect and gratitude, symbolizing the ancestors' witness to the new couple. Wine and tea and candle are given in pairs.

- Cake

People used to give traditional cakes as betrothal gifts in the past. However, people nowadays replace them with cream cakes for the convenience of the bride and groom cutting the cake on stage; the cake symbolizes the young couple's sweet love.

- Fruits

The fruit tray is made of five different types of fruits to offer to the ancestors and to pray for the young couple's love to bear sweet fruit.

- Money and jewelry

Depending on the economic situation of the groom's family, they must be prepare money and jewelry, money to share the expense of the party with the bride's family, and jewelry to give bride.

4. The order to bring the betrothal gifts to bride's house

  • The groom's family asked 4 single boys to go with the groom and the procession to the bride's house.

  • The bride's family will request that four single girls pick up the wedding gifts from the groom's family.
