En la mayoría de los casos, la EPOC se origina debido al consumo de tabaco, es decir que mientras más fume una persona más expuesta se encontraría a padecer una EPOC, sin embargo hay personas que nunca han fumado en su vida y aún así pueden desarrollar la EPOC debido a la deficiencia de una proteína llamada alfa-1 antitripsina.
