The Cardenalito (Spinus cucullatus)is an emblematic bird of the north of Venezuela, characterized by its red head and chest and black wings, not to be confused with the cardinal, a totally red bird and a little larger and definitely different, despite having similar names.
It is possible to observe in low prairies and in semi-arid environments, although every day it is more difficult because this species has historically been threatened by illegal traffic, a fact that has notably reduced its population extension of the territory where it used to live, concentrating mainly among the Lara states. and Falcón, in western Venezuela. Its total population in the wild is estimated to be less than 3,000.
It has a long mating song that makes it distinctive and makes its presence known, which is a good sign for its sighting. They are solitary birds that are strangely seen in groups.
I was able to photograph it in Maparari, in the Sierra de Falcón. with my Canon 60D 18-135mm camera.

El cardenalito es un ave emblemática del norte de venezuela, caracterizada por su cabeza y pecho rojo y alas negras, no confundir con el cardenal, pájaro totalmente rojo y un poco más grande y definitivamente distinto, a pesar de tener nombres similares.
Es posible observar en bajas praderas y en ambientes semiáridos, aunque cada día es más difícil porque esta especie históricamente ha sido amenazada por el tráfico ilegal, hecho que ha mermado notablemente su población extensión del territorio donde se solía habitar, concentrándose principalmente entre los estados Lara y Falcón, en el occidente venezolano. Se estima que su población total en estado silvestre es menor a 3000.
Tiene un canto largo de apareamiento que lo hace característico y que hace notar su presencia, lo cual es buena señal para su avistamiento. Son aves solitarias que extrañamente se ven en grupos.
