Castle of San Carlos / Castillo de San Carlos

The castle of San Carlos was an important military building located north of the city of Maracaibo, in western Venezuela, with the intention of protecting the entrance to the vast lake, especially from pirate attacks, very common in the 16th and 17th centuries.

This region has historically been a winepress of disputes, and due to its border location it is part of a binational historical culture that #3 has formed between the Colombian-Venezuelan border, where the Wayuu ethnic group forms an essential part.

On the other hand, it is an area that since colonial times has been characterized by smuggling, a very common economic activity in the region.

At the time I went, it was not exactly one of the biggest tourist attractions, and I felt a rather dense atmosphere, perhaps because of the strong breeze and heat that it was at that time, however, I found the history of the castle interesting, since had important military activity until the 20th century,

Castillo de San Carlos

El castillo de San Carlos fue un importante edificio militar ubicado al norte de la ciudad de Maracaibo, en el occidente de Venezuela, con la intención de proteger la entrada al extenso lago que conecta directamente con el Mar Caribe, sobre todo de ataques piratas, muy comunes en el siglo xvi y xvii l.

Está región históricamente ha sido un lagar de disputas, y por su ubicación fronteriza forma parte de una cultura historica binacional que#3 ha formado entre la frontera Colombo venezolana .

Donde el grupo étnico wayuu forma parte esencial.

Por otro lado es una zona que desde la época colonial se ha caracterizado por el contrabando, una actividad económica muy común en la región.

En la época que fui no era exactamente un sitio de los mayores atractivos turísticos, y sentí un ambiente más bien denso, quizás por la fuerte brisa y calor que hacía en ese momento, sin embargo me pareció interesante, la historia del castillo, ya que tuvo importante actividad militar hasta el siglo XX.
