Hey there. A little delayed post because the glue on my scarf joint neck guitar has come undone yesterday and I wasn't feel very well and I have to repair it myself. So today we're talking low end. Bass is a very underrated instrument and let me tell without bass whole mix will tear apart. All the energy and glue of music is lie within the low end of frequency spectrum. Let me show you how I processed my bass line.

If you have a noisy rig add gate first. 
Set the threshold to your liking because it depends on how hot your input signal is. Just don't chop off the start and endings.
Secondly compress the sh*t out of it. Because bass is a very dynamic instrument and you need to keep it under control or it will jump all over the mix.
I'm using this blue stripe 1176 model by Slate Digital. Which is awesome on almost everything. Set the attack fairly high with fastest release. Set the ratio to 4. Roll up the input until you see 10 dBs of gain reduction on the meter. Set the output until you hear no difference with unprocessed signal volume-wise.
I will continue this in the next post. Until then experiment with compressor and see how each parameter will affect your sound. Every each compressor has its own character. They will color your sound. Some may color it in a good way some may worsen your tone. Some are good for specific instrument some are all-around. Keep an eye on that. Happy hunting!
