For people who have been around the area for a while, acclimatising with Hive's environment may not be a big issue to you. Access to your account is through the same keys you used to log into Steem, and you have a full understanding of how the platform works. You might not find this post useful in the real sense, but I reckon you could throw in a suggestion or two to improve the quality of the series of guides going forward.
If you're entirely new to Hive and joined through the hive,io, @esteem or any other front end, then let me tell you welcome. I'm pretty sure that by now you've noticed that people mention Steem all the time and have most likely been yapping about a powerdown, and I'm also guessing that it is something you don't understand. Part of my motivation for creating this post is to ensure that people don't require going over to Steem blockchain to learn about Hive, even though both technologies are effectively identical, for now anyway.
I'm going to keep the political/governance talk out of the way for now and go straight to explaining a few things you need to know about Hive blockchain and will minimise the number of times I mention Steem along the way, to ensure there's no misconception.
What is Hive
Hive is a fork that was created from preexisting technology found on Steem, and many old users migrated to the new ecosystem and used the same keys to log into both. However, in your case, you signed up for Hive, so your account is exclusively for this platform alone.
Hive is a decentralised, DPOS(delegated proof of stake) open-source, digital ecosystem where users can build a variety of Dapps(decentralised applications) for social, financial and other purposes. I will focus on the blogging/content creation platforms like hive.blog, @threespeak, @dtube, @peakd, @dporn and @esteem of the community to explain some of the fundamentals.
Content Creation on Hive
The account you create on https://signup.hive.io/ gives you access to a variety of applications, including the aforementioned Dapps built on the blockchain. You can use these Dapps as a user, or contribute as a spectator depending on your interest,
- @threespeak, @dtube, @dporn: Video hosting platforms. You can watch, curate(we'll get to this), or make your own videos
- @esteem, @peakd, hive.blog: Blogging platforms with different interfaces. They typically host text, images, gifs and enables embedding video links. You can interact with other bloggers in various communities.
- @dsound: For audio content hosting.
Rules for Sharing Content on Hive
THERE ARE NO RULES. You have complete freedom to share whatever you want on your page, and unlike Facebook, Steemit, and Twitter where you can get banned or blocked from the platform, on Hive, You can post absolutely anything you like. Literally anything.
Earning on Hive
Remember those posts we just talked about? On Hive, the content you create based on its quality, acceptability, etc. can be monetised through a process called upvoting. Upvoting is the equivalence of "liking", and it is dependent on something called Hive power.
Basic terms you should know
- Hive: It is the cryptocurrency you earn from your posts, and it is tradable in exchanges like Bittrex, Ionomy and Probit. More to come
- HBD: Not to be confused for Happy Birthday, it is Hive Backed Dollar, and it is also a tradable token earned through blogging.
- Hive Power: This represents the amount of Hive you stake in the platform. It determines your influence on the blockchain and also determines the value of your upvote
- Upvote: "liking" a post or comment but offers a monetary value determined by Hive Power
- Rehive/Reblog: The equivalence of Retweeting
Summary
We're a thriving ecosystem with advanced battle-tested technology that has existed over four years. However, Hive is effectively a new blockchain, that was adapted from you know who, but the difference is that it is a place that embraces decentralisation and freedom of expression above everything else. Welcome to Hive
If you're active on Facebook and will like to spread the word to billions of people using that platform, please join the Hive Facebook group
We're all about spreading Hive to the public, and because of that, a Hive page was created. So there's also a Hive Page and add it to your profile as I did.
