HOMESCHOOL VIRUAL MUSEUM VISIT AND ASSIGNMENTS ~ KEY CHALLENGE

In January my son got a assigment for school. We are homeschooling due to covid and the key challange sounded so exiting. Its a virtual challenge so the museum is brought to you! What a cool assignment when home schooling is so different and if you ask my son so boring in covid times. Normally this would be a day trip but now this is also to learn and navigate within a building when on the computer. That the white arrows on the museum floor, let you go left, right up and down, so all corners of the museum can be entered. Assignments are there with a number. Keys are needed to get to the answers. All the answers will get you the outcome of the riddle given at the beginning. So you can visit the museum from your comfy chair with your nose on top of the painting “ The Battle of Waterloo “ ? Want to not just watch the Night Watch but really experience it? Or put together your own ideal exhibition? All of that is possible for free and from the comfort of your own home!

This was an assigment our son has for school, BUT we love it aswell. History is very important in our family, we love movies about it aswell and its so great that its virtual.

Normally you go to the Rijks and use the free app to explore the Rijksmuseum's collection. With 14 different multimedia tours and many great routes specially created by visitors using Rijksstudio. The app is the perfect way to explore the museum and its collection, but due to the dutch covid rules ever since november all public places are closed , so also the museums. So now we have to explore from the comfort of home. Not the same, but better this than nothing. Not all museums have a virtual tour but a lot do.

As you can see from all the screenshots I made, the kids got a glimpse and an assigment Follow Operation Night Watch. About the Research and preparations but also the progress and research of the condition of beautiful “ the Night Watch’, the Restoration and the Conservation treatment used today.

You see the largest and most detailed image ever made of a work of art. With a size of no less than 44.8 gigapixels you can zoom in so far that Rembrandt's paint strokes and even the pigment particles in the paint become visible. So great !!

Cool thing that during the school tour the assignments were very diverse and research needed to be done. For us also great to see because this is one of the outings dad does with the kids one on one.

What's happening in the Rijks right now ?

Paintings are often varnished with a transparent varnish layer to saturate and protect the paint layers. Many of the previously applied varnishes consist of a natural resin that ages and yellows over time. Therefore these varnish layers are generally removed and replaced during restorations. The current varnish layers on the Night Watch are not original but were applied during the restorations in the ‘70s and ‘90s.

To determine whether the varnish can be safely removed from the paint layers, varnish removal tests are currently being carried out. And that process can be watched.

The process is a years long operation and the Rijks museum gets funds for this from the government.

In the Rijks museum it is normally a walhalla for people that blog, look at the topics, I can do a #featheredfriends blog about all the paintings with birds. Domestic interiors for the #lifestylelounge community. But also the portraits, for the #art community. There is so much and the history and place is just magnificent.

Do you go to the museum and what was the last one you visited?

Week 45 lets go on

Hey there @brittandjosie it's been a long time, good to see how technology works in our favor where you can sit in a room and explore the world.

Yes long time no blog😉 I hope you are doing ok.
And yes technology is incorporated in schools at the age of 9 and I have to confess that it’s cool. Ok I rather go live to the museum but this was a pretty cool experience aswell.

And the kids navigate so easy they are the future and tech is a course in school also so this was a nice opportunity to learn something as a mum

Yep can relate it to my elders as well, I guess that is somewhat of a generation gap for us but all is well as long as we understand each other and get along.
