Hi all

This is my entry for HIVE open Mic week 31.

I went with a traditional Scottish Song called The Bonnie Banks Of Loch Lomond this week.

I thought it might work for the "As above so below theme" due to the chorus "Youll take the high road and ill take the low road and ill be in Scotland before you"

The low road in this case means death as this song would have been written in a time when men went of to fight for King and country knowing they might not return alive.

So yeah ,I thought it might kind of fit this weeks theme so I thought I would give it a go. :)

"The Bonnie Banks Of Loch Lomond"

By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes,
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond,
Where me and my true love were ever wont to gae,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.

O ye'll tak' the high road, and I'll tak' the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland a'fore ye,
But me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.

'Twas there that we parted, in yon shady glen,
On the steep, steep side o' Ben Lomond,
Where in soft purple hue, the highland hills we view,
And the moon coming out in the gloaming.

O ye'll tak' the high road, and I'll tak' the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland a'fore ye,
But me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.

The wee birdies sing and the wildflowers spring,
And in sunshine the waters are sleeping.
But the broken heart it kens nae second spring again,
Though the waeful may cease frae their grieving.

O ye'll tak' the high road, and I'll tak' the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland a'fore ye,
But me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.

There's an ending o' the dance, Bonnie Charlies safe in France,
And the Clans they hae all paid the lawing,
And the Hangman has his ain, and we twa are left alane,
Free o' Carlisle gaol in the dawing!

O ye'll tak' the high road, and I'll tak' the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland a'fore ye,
But me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.

It's a familiar melody and the lyrics are hauntingly beautiful, considering the history: a warrior's willingness to fight and die. A humbling reminder of the violent times past, and the comparatively peaceful times present. Gives me perspective on the small battles in my own life.
