1923

in GEMSlast month (edited)

Let’s go back to the 20’s, the roaring 20’s. This King George V one dollar stamp was issued in 1923. Between 1911 and 1925, a series of stamps ranging from 1 cent to 1 dollar were issued. I do not own every stamp in the series, so I will just show you these three. They call it the King George V Admiral series. Imagine what you could buy for $1 in 1923! Let’s look into this. Apparently it cost .25 cents to go to a movie, so one could go on a double date and pay for all four people for a buck! Oh how times have changed. Now it costs around $15 or so per ticket. That double date just got costly. $60-$80 dollars, not even including the over priced popcorn, drinks and hotdogs…

Stamps seem like such a blast from the past with technology being the delivery layer for so many things. Funny coincidence is I have to mail something with a stamp today for the first time in years and I don’t even know how much a stamp costs these days. Probably enough for a double date at the movies in the 20s.

"how much a stamp costs these days." <- this question makes no sense. you should ask: how much will it cost me to send a simple letter / postcard / small package - across the country, overseas, registered mail, airmail, etc.

So, sending today a “small package” (for example, containing a magazine, book or CD inside ) from my country overseas will cost me 600-800 rubles, or more, up to 2600 rubles (if the weight is more). 600 rubles = 6.5 dollars. Accordingly, I will need to buy and stick many stamps on the envelope for this amount. in the 2000s I exchanged a lot of CD and DVD mail, I always liked to paste a lot of stamps on 1/4 of the envelope :))))

Lol. There it is! Current postage is $1.07, unless it is heavier than a basic envelope.

The stamps of those days are son nice and different from the stamps of our era. Look these engravings!!
I would like to see more classical items of your collection.
Thanks for sharing these stamps.

Yes they are “antiques”, I will be sharing more in the coming days. Thanks for your interest.

Please do. Especially good being backed / combined with stories. 🙏

Yes, will do.

Nice ones here my friend, wish we could go back to where a buck did something for us, Haha. Have a blessed Saturday.

Right? A buck basically buys you nothing other than a pack of gum or something.

Here, in my country, for a buck you can have a bit more, like a 0.5 L bottle of water or soda, a box of matches... a package of dry instant noodles... etc

Instant noodles around here are around $1.50, going to the store later today, will verify.

Thats not the cheapest edition I guess... we have such ones, imported, in mid-price division too. 0.2$ and 0.3$ were very simple and cheapest ones.

Coo guy on the stamp, like that orange one, vintage

Vintage, indeed it is eh bos.

What great works of art! They don't make them like that anymore... Going to the movies these days can land you in the poor house! Those are some great stamps, I just love the way they made them artistically back then.

Exactly, they don't make em like they used to. Thanks for looking.

In my teen yrs, I used to collect sea stuff (shells, corals, etc) and stamps. In this field, my passion was a) everything connected with sea habitants, b) colonial stuff: I was very into the newish XX century history, and colonial divide of the world, this stuff. So I enjoyed pretty much all those George V, Edwards, Queen Victoria stamps with imprints on them, denoting distant tropical countries, or tiny islands that look on a map like a fly shit. Goodbye, romance!
My collection from that days is safe, but its in parents house. Thus, I cant take a pic and show anything. Sadly.

It is fun to collect stuff isn't it? Whether it be stamps, coins, and for those with more $, cars. I would love to collect old cars, but don't have the $ or space for it.

I could spend the day looking at your postage stamps @daveks friend yeah!!... It's a lovely thing to see!
