A nebulous saint general named Ulugh Khanjahan , who was ethinic Turk traditionally a warrior of great piety . Died in october 25 ,1459, also known as Ulugh Khan and Khan-i-Azam , was a Muslim sufi saint and local ruler in Bagerhat . the official title Khan-i- Azam signifies that he was an officer of the Bengal Sultan Nasiruddin Mahmud Shah i (1437-1459).
The world Ulugh before his name speaks of his Uzbek origin. It is believed that he built the great Shait-gumbad Mosque . Khanjahan, a moble under the tughlaqs m seems to have come to Bengal just after the sack of Delhi (1398) by Timur . He acquired the forest area of the Sundarbans from the sultan of Delhi a-nd subsequently from the sultan of Bengal . He cleared up the dense forest in the sundarbans area to set up human settlements.
The earliest torch bearer of Islam in the south and systematically laid out the nucleus of a rich capital city . Was a contemporary of the independent Bengal sultan Nasiruddin Muhammad Shah (1442-59). Khanjahan(R:) conquered this part of Bengal during the rule of the later Illyas Shahi period founded a city named shahar Khalifatabad. There is no architectural evidence of Muslim rule here before Khanjahan. (R:) Khanjahan (R:) ruled over an extensive jungle territory in and around Khanlifatabad, virtually as an independent chief, but seems never to have issued coins in his name or assumed any lofty sovereign title. I Khanjahan was the most famous sufi saint of the chisti order of Bengal.
Khan-i-jahan, established a town in the 15th century AD at the western peripheral land of present -day Bagerhat town . Based on numismatic evidence some scholars are of the opinion that the town was called khalifatabad during the 16th century AD .
At the time it's prosperity , the town was studded with many buildings, mosques, places , mausoleums and other public buildings in a short span of time . Reservoirs, traditional by 360 number tombs , roads etc. many have gone but of the surviving monuments the Shait- Gumbad mosque, Singair Mosque , Bibibegni Mosque and Ranovijoypur Mosque.
Mausoleum of Khan-i-Jahan, Tomb of Zindapir and Rezakhoda Mosque are particularly notable . they spread over at least a 2.5 km from the north to south and 6 km from east to west. Bagerhat was inscribed on the UNESCO world heritage list in 1985 in recognition of it's outstanding universal value for all mankind . Achievement of Khanjahan : He founded some townships , built mosque , madrasahs and sarais , roads, highways and bridges, excavated a large number of dighis in the districts of greater Jessore and Khulna, that comprises the Mosque city of Bagerhat .
Besides in his fortified metropolis of Khalifatabad (modern Bagerhat) he build three townships, such as Maruli kasba, paigram kasba and Bara Bazar. He is said to have built a highway from Bagerhat to Chittagong a 32 km long road from Samantasena to Badhkhali and a road running from Shuvabara to Daulatpur in khulna . the most notable of his architectural monuments are Shait-Gumbad mosque at bagerhat . of the large number of dighis and ponds excavated by him the most notable are the Khanjali dighi (1450) near his tomb and Ghora dighi , to the west of Shait-Gumbad mosque .
New area of architecture khan jahan introduced a new architectural style in his buildings ,which is named after him . The khan jahan style is seen in a group of buildings in the greater districts of Khulna ,Jessore and Barishal . The tomb of khanjahan became a deeply venerated site in the century following the preacher's death in 1459AD.
