Hello Hivers! Today is a day of processes and tips, I will tell you a little bit about my experience creating illustrations with watercolors and I will show you a little bit of how was the evolution of two of my illustrations. I hope you like it.
Siempre he dicho que las acuarelas son ideales para ilustraciones rápidas, pues al estar pintando con agua, necesitas apresurarte y lograr tus colores antes de que esta se seque.
I have always said that watercolors are ideal for quick illustrations, because when you are painting with water, you need to hurry and get your colors before it dries.
¿Cómo funciona? Bueno, hay varias presentaciones de acuarelas, pero las más importantes son tres, los lápices acuarelables, las pastillas de acuarela y los tubos de acuarela. Para los principiantes es recomendable empezar con las pastillas, ya que tienen mayor control del pigmento y no corren el riesgo de desperdiciarlo, como pasa con el tubo de acuarela.
How does it work? Well, there are several presentations of watercolors, but the most important are three, watercolor pencils, watercolor tablets and watercolor tubes. For beginners it is advisable to start with the tablets, since they have greater control of the pigment and do not run the risk of wasting it, as happens with the watercolor tube.
Solo tienes que agregarle agua a tu pigmento, poco a poco, hasta alcanzar la concentración de color que sea adecuada para tu ilustración, hay que tener en cuenta que siempre se verá un poco más claro al secarse. Es por esto que, al pintar en acuarelas se hace desde el tono más claro hasta el más oscuro y en capas, así que es necesario tener mentalizados los tonos para poder trabajar.
You only have to add water to your pigment, little by little, until you reach the concentration of color that is adequate for your illustration, keeping in mind that it will always look a little lighter when it dries. This is why, when painting in watercolors you paint from the lightest to the darkest tone and in layers, so it is necessary to have the tones in mind to be able to work.
De manera que, si queremos hacer reflejos de luz, debemos dejar el espacio o bien, aplicar lo que se conoce como el “mix media” y usar pintura acrílica blanca u otro color brillante para hacer los toques finales de luz.
So, if we want to make light reflections, we must leave the space or apply what is known as "mix media" and use white acrylic paint or another bright color to make the final touches of light.
Aquí les dejo el proceso de una de mis primeras acuarelas, como verán no soy muy buena con el cabello y los fondos, pero eso mejora con la práctica

Disculpen la falta de proceso, muchas veces tendemos a abstraernos tanto en un proyecto que olvidamos documentarlo completamente. Me siento especialmente orgullosa de esta ilustración, pero de nuevo, el cabello necesita trabajo.
Sorry for the lack of process, many times we tend to get so absorbed in a project that we forget to document it completely. I am especially proud of this illustration, but again, the hair needs work.
Aquí quiero que detallen la famosa “hoja de pruebas”. Es imprescindible, con cualquier medio de pintura que usen, y más con las acuarelas, que siempre tengan a la mano su hoja de prueba, para que puedan ver claramente cómo quedará su mezcla y si es necesario agregar agua o pigmento.
Here I want you to detail the famous "proof sheet". It is imperative, with any painting medium you use, and more so with watercolors, that you always have your test sheet handy, so you can clearly see how your mixture will look and if you need to add water or pigment.
Otra cosa importante a tener en cuenta cuando se está pintando con acuarelas es usar dos vasos de agua, uno para humedecer el pincel y el otro para limpiar el pincel, así no terminaran con un pincel sucio y los colores no se van a mezclar, adicional a esto deben tener un “pañito” para que puedan limpiar su pincel cada tanto mientras ilustran y cambiar el agua si es necesario.
Another important thing to keep in mind when painting with watercolors is to use two glasses of water, one to moisten the brush and the other to clean the brush, so you will not end up with a dirty brush and the colors will not mix, in addition to this you should have a "wipe" so you can clean your brush from time to time while illustrating and change the water if necessary.
Cuando se trabaja con acuarelas la limpieza y la organización son claves. Algo que debo destacar es que, al tratarse de agua, el papel sobre el que se va a pintar es importante que sea de gramaje alto ¿Qué significa eso? Deben usar papel grueso, especial para que pueda retener el agua y no traspase y manche todo su trabajo. Así que las hojas blancas comunes no sirven para trabajar con las acuarelas.
When working with watercolors, cleanliness and organization are key. Something I should point out is that, since water is involved, it is important that the paper on which you are going to paint is heavyweight. You must use thick, special paper so that it can retain the water and does not bleed through and stain all your work. So ordinary white paper is not suitable for working with watercolors.
Pero no se preocupen, las acuarelas son un mundillo muy amigable, hay blocks con papel especial para acuarelas que sacan de apuro, solo necesitan eso y las pastillas de acuarela para empezar, y claro, pinceles suaves para que retengan el agua.
But don't worry, watercolors are a very friendly world, there are blocks with special paper for watercolors that will get you out of trouble, you only need that and the watercolor tablets to start, and of course, soft brushes to retain the water.
